< 4 Grand > 200 BHP !
#1
Just had a look on Autotrader.co.uk (great site but not as good as the mag as you cant read it in the bath !)
There seems to be a lot of 200 BHP plus tackle dropping under 4 grand these days, Some like the Supra Turbo (500 ?) even less, gets me to thinking, Im 31 with Full NCD, I do my own repairs (if you want a job doing properly !) I realise some of these could be money pits but, then again they may not be. Any other Suggestions?
Supra/Supra Turbo
Mr2 Turbo
Early M5
Integrale
Audi S2
Audi V8

Try an R32 GTS4
They come with the same 4WD and 4WS system as the GTR. But are fitted with a straight six 2.0l single turbo engine, producing about 220bhp. These can be tuned to over 400bhp so loads of room for some diy engine mods.

Got my 220BHP Saab 9000 Turbo 1 year ago for just over £2k. For £3k plus you could get a 225BHP 9000 Aero. Or earlier car £2k plus £2k on mods on suspension and bring power up to 275BHP!

yeah but Kevin, those saab's are front-wheel-spinners no good having 275 bhp if ya can't use it:stick-yer-tounge-out-thingy:
the Audi S2 is 4wd remember, good for 350-400 bhp tuning potential.

My money would (and probably will) go on the 300ZX. Best bet is a non-turbo SWB manual for about 4k. 230bhp, easily tuneable and about 80kg lighter than the 2+2 twin turbo. Plus you can't beat normally aspirated...

A mate had an S2 for years and spent wads on the engine,(about a grand just on the head, and this was years back)he never saw that kind of power though. He reckons it felt really strong and reliable though.

Here's my Rover 220GSi turbo -
These can be had for £3k these days. Use the spare grand to sort out suspension and brakes, which are the downside to this car. On the plus side, once sorted, the improvement is very noticable. 200bhp in standard trim, and an extra 15-20 can be had easily and safely with a simple bleed valve and Optimax. Getting more than 240bhp becomes a lot more costly if you want to keep it strong and reliable.
Can't comment on any of the others as I havn't owned or driven them, but there's some nice ones in your list

Mook, the Rovers have always been on my list since my 800 Vitesse
800 quid with a blown motor, 400 for a second hand one, ran it for a year and sold it for 1400, made a profit on a Rover, would have another and your looks superb !
If your handy with the spanners the Rovers makes sense, if not, forget it, my uncle has a mint 620 for sale for a grand if anyones wants cheap mint transport !

Mark, thanks for the compliment . It does make it a bit easier with it being slightly more 'mechanical' in the way it's made offering a half decent spanner monkey the chance to do a reasonable chunk of the upkeep

You could easily get a stage1 2wd Saph for that. That's a lot of smiles for silly money.
330hp isn't that dear either. If you are nervous about buying one then take my advice and go through a tuner who knows of one.

But be careful what you buy if looking at a saff cossie. There are an awful lot of ropey old sheds out there.... nearly all of them in fact.
I bought mine 12 months ago, and I've spent four times the cost of the car on it !!!!!!

Cut and shut?
What an earth are you on about?
When I said the entire rear end, I didn't cut the rear end of the car off! I just stripped it all down and replaced both chassis rails, and the rear suspension, including diff etc etc.....
