Astra H 1.9 CDTi SRi, 150


And yeah, I know it's a FIAT engine.


Already paid out £1100 for new inlet manifold to solve swirl flap probs. It still has the ongoing fault whereby it goes into limp mode if I press too hard on the throttle, and now I have ANOTHER fault, hesitation as I go through 1700 rpm in second or third. I cannot make it do it in 1st, or any higher gear than 3rd.


Started out so slight, only the driver could feel it. Now it's a definite jerk.


Car is 58 plate and done 122k. No faults shown and no codes stored.



And NO I'm NOT in a position to buy a new car!

had this exact problem on my 08plate company arstra estate it was the maf sensor that was after they had replaced the fuel pump, and various other parts

FFS it's ten years old spent it's life in the salty regions of Skeggers with the U.K's Crappy roads, potholes, grit, salt, speed bumps, low grade low-sulphur diesel. It's past it's use by date. As for the Fiat JTD lump...how many 2008 Fiat/Alfas do you see on the road? We're throwing new Fiat Multijet engines into four-year old Bippers with less than 80k at the rate of one a month!

Even the Astra E didn't last that long: By six years, the old man's had turned from red to pink-oxide and needed a litre of oil for every tank of petrol, drums had gone out of round, shocks were floaty-boaty and the nail in the coffin was the cam sensor which is part of the distributor meant it wouldn't start when hot...new dizzy cost more than the car's worth!

And that's before mentioning the rust!


Look, just to make you feel better, I have a 2005 Golf. Within months of it reaching its tenth birthday the following has happened:

Front wings gone as rusty as a Lancia
Alarm siren packed in: croaking and draining the battery
Front lower arm bushes failed (interesting when braking on the motorway causes it lurch to the right).
Both Rear springs broke (one Spring broke twice! As I drove round a bit with it broken).
Rain sensor/auto wipers developed a mind of their own
Auto headlamps struggle to tell night from day (same sensor as wipers)
Door lock motors stopped working

More recently:
Rear shocks went bouncy
Front Springs sagged so they were 10mm from bottoming out on the bump stops.
Rear calipers seized
Heater matrix partially blocked (only ever used G12 coolant and de-mineralised water to fill/top off)
Radiator leaking
Heater blower imbalanced, so noisy/vibrates at high speeds
Subframe moving, making the phantom clunk on certain potholes etc. Throwing out the geometry in the process.
Steering rack motor is weak when parking so I lose assistance when I need it most.
Pinion play in the rack; probably due to me having to turn harder when parking due to above

Add to that the cam cover breather/regulator valve sticking every 12months causing MAF and throttle body errors and donkey-bucking theatrics when it sticks: Oil change usually sorts it (fresh oil has detergents that seem to shift the sludge in the valve.

And not to forget the timing chains, dual mass and clutch which were already replaced when it was under warranty.

But sure Vauxhall are shyte - the newer ones are worse!

I'll NEVER buy another Poxall, and tbh, wouldn't have one given at present.


I'm reliably informed I need to change the fuel filter again, but they seem to be twice the UK price here

Strangely, my 1.3 Eco diesel is ALSO a FIAT engine...and parts are about 50% cheaper at a FIAT dealer.

Really barmy thing with the 1.3cdti is in the Combo/Corsa C it'll plod on for about 150k miles without much trouble (one did pop a intermediate shaft out the gearbox casing into the clutch cover...still drove though )

Yet same lump in a Bipper 1.3hdi is knackered by 80K miles! They are now all failing the new stricter MOT test 1.5 -1m particulate limit, even the ones with replacement engines too!!
