Here we go again
Astra 1.9 CDTi SRi 150, sluggish, smokey and a poor starter.
Vauxhall daignosed it (£79.94) as needing ANOTHER new EGR valve, (only 18 months since the last genuine one fitted), glow plugs and anew inlet manifold inluding swirl flaps.
Total cost, £1411 plus VAT.
And the car is worth around £2100!
So not viable, yet do I scrap a £2000 car?
I've looked at the swirl flap repair kits, but been told that the manifold is "probably so coked up that the repair will fail, a new manifold is needed". Now a complete manifold is only £170 including all gaskets and an egr valve is £140, ditto, glow plugs are about £10 each, four needed. I can even replace the silly nylon swirl levers with brass cups for another £7.
So I'm looking at £1100's worth of labour??? Even at Vauxhall prices, that's FOURTEEN hours????????
Anyone advise...and please, I've heard all the platitudes re: diesels, older cars etc. And no, I wouldn't have another diesel.
I am NOT in a position to buy new. If I was, I would have done so.
So advice on the present problem only, please.

bought 100k miler Mondeo and had to fork out 1k for turbo and 1.5k for dmf and various needed stuff therein , within a year getting it although had some insurance payout on the clutch
Went for another 50k though ( and might gone further if id changed oil more often and cleaned out egr)
Have you tried any Vauxhall forums , theres usually ton of advice ...and warnings

had a quick look on youtube- 6 bolts and 1 electrical connector right on the very top of the engine /15 minutes to remove and say an hour to clean tops- new EGR valves are around a hundred quid on EBAY if its faulty. 150 quid for an inlet manifold brand new from "nevlock performance" what have you got to lose??

I scrapped my Clio last year, maybe worth £1500 to 2000 I'm not sure. After changing the coil packs and plugs was stilling getting a misfire and high idle. Just not worth it for me to put more cash in.

My partner has the same car. Not long after we got it we had the same issues. We got a new inlet manifold with flaps and my mechanic mate fitted it. He said it was a pain to fit as the fuel pump needs removing as it's on the top pulley of the cambelt. It can be locked off in position though so you don't have to remove the belt.
With the egr we got the blanks (about £20) and had it mapped out. A year later and all is well. Might be worth getting a price from a decent back street garage.
What area are you in?

It's the work involved in replacing the manifold, there about 50 steps to getting it off, including draining coolant and etc, and quite a few who've tried it then report car won't start afterwards, had to be recovered to dealer.....OPCOM not talking to the parts??
I don't have a garage to work in...well, I do, but the Scoob is in there and the space is TINY. With the Astra in, there'd be zero space to walk around.
I'm talking to a local guy I trust about looking at the car, and the eldest's mate's dad has an MoT place nearby that does a lot of repairs, he might give me a better price.

Yeah. Well a local mechanic did some work on it. I spend a day or so checking stuff and with nowhere to work on it myself I just cut my losses. Ideally I would have a big space to have left it and ****ed around with it on my own time.
