Took a test drive in a red one at barons in farnborough and loved it.

The engine is amazing, torque everywhere revs out and sound brilliant.
Interior also a massive improvement over the previous 1 series.
Led lights also look stunning.

So impressed I've ordered one, won't be here till late December early January.

You need your eyes testing. If you were talking about saloons or coupes you might have a point *, but the same can definitely not be said of the 1-series hatches. There's nothing else in the BMW range that looks remotely like them.


* Not helped of course by the ridiculous modern trend of "de-badging" everything from the most mundane 1.8 diesel rep-mobile upwards.

Apart from the glass backward from pillar and front bumper it's the same as any other 1,2 series ..!

Personally I've gone light on the options there's plenty of equipment as standard. After coming from the Impreza there is more than enough for me.

Was originally going to get a manual but after a very long test drive in the zf auto I was converted.
Shifts are instant and so smooth with pops n crackles on down shifts.
Full manual has no intervention you can bounce it off the limiter and it won't change.

The new B58 charged cooled engine is also a massive selling point, full torque from around 1k and the howl as you rev it out!
Sales woman was brave, egging me on and saying suff like "oh you can try out the performance down here"

If you get the 5 door, make sure you fit the 3 door under chassis brace. Stops the rear sub frame moving around and causing a vague felling to the back end over bumpy roads at speed.

So wish the UK version came with Xdrive.

They've also dropped the manual on the LHD version too

I find that very surprising for two reasons. First, the M135/140i is a driver's car. Second, there have been lots of problems with the ZF-8 box.

Perhaps BMW has made changes to the box for the M140i and no more issues are anticipated. Either way, somebody needs to have a word with the marketing men, as I'm sure an X-drive M140i would sell very well in the UK.

Because I've been pestering for more information on this car the sales rep was nice enough to send me a link of the bmw technical training document for the new B58 engine.

Does seem very impressive, The main engine improvements over the M135i n55 engine are,

Larger Twin scroll turbo over M135i with a increase of 6 percent in turbine wheel size and 10 percent increase in compressor wheel diameter.

Now uses the diesel heat treated aluminium closed deck block with Iron arc wire-sprayed cylinder walls.

Forged crank shaft
Forged rods

IroX coated bearings for reduced wear and friction.

A map controlled oil pump for max oil supply at low revs to key areas under high torque loads.

Heat management module to accurately control engine coolant temps and speed up engine warming.

Coolant cross flow passes coolant over the hotter exhaust side to the cooler inlet side for uniform heat distribution in the aluminium cylinder head.

Liquid to air charge cooler improves throttle response due to a huge reduction in intake pipe work volume,
More stable intake temperatures due to being controlled via its own map controlled coolant pump and radiator.

Gearbox has also been improved with new software, It's faster and smoother than before, Torque handling capacity has also increased.

Suspension hard wear is the same as the M135i lCI face lift, But now M140 has its own geometry settings over the rest of the 1 series range.

Been some impressive dyno figures in the us on the 340i using the same engine.
Around 330hp 380 ftlbs at the wheels.
Also a interesting video of the M240 out running the M2.

I will be taking it to Surrey rolling road after its ran in to see if these number stack up.

Does seem odd why the fittings are there and they didn't fit it on the 5 door.

4 big rubber nvh insolating bushes holding the entire rear suspension with no support causes lots of toe change in sharp direction changes and when pushing on down bumpy roads.

The triangular brace bolts to both sides of the subframe and locks it to centre of the chassis preventing flex of the bushes.

What is the expected uplift in power and torque with the JB4 on this engine?

Early days yet for this engine but map 1 is complete and that's around 380hp 380ftlbs at the wheels.

There's also adjustable boost control for 1st 2nd and 3rd gear so you can adjust it to get the best launch, Built in data loging and Water and meth control.

There will be more free software updates coming soon for more power with decat's, intakes ect.
Also a function to control the exhaust flaps via the steering wheel.

Hopefully so, All speculation until it's proven, can't find any information on one being dynoed or tuned in the uk so far. Just a few US threads using the same engine in the 3 series using 93 Ron.
