Default Mileage Discrepancy?

Been looking to buy a BMW 330CI for a while and was due to view said car in the morning. However I have just HPI it with the RAC and it came up with this.

National Mileage Register

Data currently held on the National Mileage Register (NMR) indicates that there may be a mileage discrepancy on this vehicle.
Mileages as recorded by the National Mileage Register
Date recorded
Recorded by
Mileage reading
Total
04-Jul-2007
DVLA
100,000
100,000

06-Oct-2009
DVLA
64,000
64,000

07-Jan-2012
NMR
86,000
86,000

All else on the search was clear.

Emailed the seller who said he only has the previous two MOT's. I have no experience in all this stuff, and cannot understand what goes on for example why has something gone on 7th Jan 2012. The seller has said he's owned the car about 2yrs.

And what is the difference between the DVLA entering mileage and NMR?

Safe to say I will not be veiwing the car, hope someone with alittle knowledge can explain it all - Thanks in adavance.

You can check previous MOTs online if you have either the registration document number or the latest MOT test number I think. This will show you what the mileage reading was at each MOT.

Sounds like he bought it from somewhere which may have clocked the car.

Provided it's in good nick, that's not necessarily a reason to run a mile - but make sure it's priced accordingly. A car with about 130,000 miles on it will be getting a bit tired, of course, but could still have plenty of life left in it.

If you take they key to a BMW dealer they will be able to tell you what the mileage is, it has a chip that stores all the info in it unless they have hacked it as well.
It seems like it has been clocked though.

How does the mileage get recorded though? And what is with the dates shown, is that a change of owner?

I still dont know the difference between DVLA reference & NMR. I tyred to check mot history online but only have the reg number, think you need other info aswell.

Cant take the key anywhere as vehichle is located 112 miles away!

Do a MOT history check (its FREE! ):

http://motinfo.direct.gov.uk/interne...ry-Request.jsp

Unfortunately this is not uncommon and BMW e46s can be easily clocked, its quite easy for a previous owner or car dealer to accidentally-on purpose "lose" the service history/past invoices/past mots to hide a car's history. Bear in mind the current owner may not know either.

It also puts a seller in the clear as they can plead ignorance should something be amiss. As for example if a service book was stamped up to imply the mileage was genuine would be fraud.

If the car has BMW service history a BMW dealer of the same franchise should be able to call it up on their computer. Some can be helpful, some aren't so helpful. But first things first do that MOT history check!!

Its logged on every MOT since 2005. Before computerisation, MOT stations had to send off pass sheets so that VOSA could update the mileage and pass/fail status on their system by hand.

Also if a keeper voluteers to write down the mileage when updating the V5 or filling in a Road Tax renewal form. Cars spot checked and inspected by Vosa officials may also have the mileage logged.

I had this problem a lot when working for car dealers. If you opted to hpi check a car and do the NMR check, you entered the mileage. This was then stored as THE MILEAGE for that vehicle.

The problem is, if someone just guessed the mileage or rounded it up and another dealer does the NMR check with the correct mileage, then it can show this as being clocked when in actual fact it's just the info that's wrong.

If you can prove the error HPI will amend their details.

If you're serious about the car, do some digging. I'd probably start by checking the service history and ringing the dealers that have serviced it as they put the actual mileage shown on the dash.

it looks like an error on the first one, entered as exactly 100,000 miles which seems quiet an odd exact number to come up with.

Ideally need the mileage from 2005/6 to get a rough idea of whether the 2007 is incorrect.

MOT history check should get you that...they log mileage as far back as 2005.
