Default Anybody ever had any Marc?

I think it's distilled from the grape skins after they have been pressed to make wine.

I have a bottle here, it's a sort of yellowish-clear, slightly oily.

Quite smooth, but with a bite. 47% apparently.

I think most people might know it through the Italian version, Grappa.

When posted to Cyprus I tried something from the locals called Zivania - believe it to be something similar to what you describe. Brings back memories of being plied with it by a beautiful young Greek lady who's family owned Maroullas Hotel near Ayia Napa - and yes I discerned that she was beautiful before copious amounts of it had been consumed!!!!!

When we were in Cyprus we always used to get free wine with a Kebab meal.

It was known as Kokinelli and you can get an idea of its status by the fact that it used to arrive in bottles with foil tops like the ones on the old milk bottles!

It actually tasted pretty good and was a great "giggle mixture". Was usually the start of a good evening.

I once had some from a properly corked bottle which they sold for about 50p and it must have been high grade stuff because it was very pleasant to drink.

Happy days!

Les

Raki : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rak%C4%B1

Can be bought in proper bottles in shops or.... Every shop keeper seems determined to distill his own and offer it to customers.
