You can use any song that you have in your iTunes library that is not a protected song.
If I can remember right, this is how.
Find the song you want to use and highlight it.
Right Click, choose get info and go to the Options tab.
Choose the start time and stop time of the bit you want to use as the ringtone. Maximum length that works seems to be about 40 seconds.
Click OK
Now Right Click again and choose Create AAC version. This creates a duplicate of the song but just the section you wanted.
Now drag the song to your desktop and then change that files extension from .m4a to .m4r
Go back to iTunes and delete the short song you just created and go back to the original song and clear the check boxes for start and stop time so that goes back to normal.
Now drag the .m4r file from your desktop back into the Library bit on the left of iTunes.
It'll import as a ringtone and be ready to use on your iPhone.
Works for me.

Downloaded some program for the computer. Record the ringtone you want, does a conversion. Add to iTunes, iPhone then reads it as a ringtone format, job done... and I GOT DE MONIES

iRinger, download it from the net on your pc/laptop and then just choose which song you want out of your libary and select which bit of the song and when you save it it saves into ringtones in iTunes just sync with your phone and job done.
I used to do it the way LanCat said but it's a lot of messing about when iRinger is so straightforward and quick.
