As title really.....
Does it matter about it being an email/job-site based application.
(Not me - I've got a great job )

It helps imo
I submitted a letter of application and a CV earlier this month for the whatever position advertised in/on wherever. To date, I have not heard from your office. I would like to confirm receipt of my application and reiterate my interest in the job.

Always chase; especially if its a job that involces generating business for the company. A rule of thumb that Id use would be: a firm that doesnt want you to chase an application should be avoided...

Nice one GC8 - how soon though? Or is it a case of "too soon is never soon enough"
I'm intrigued as I've always been in the fortunate position of being chased/head-hunted

FWIW, my grammar and spelling etc is perfect. I just have to dumb it down so the dimwits on this site don't feel too bad about their own mediocrity!!!
