Default coax cable from Skybox - getting audio into amplifier ?

skybox outputs video via HDMI socket to projector

is there a way to get the audio from the RF OUT on the sky box to my amp ?

the amp has phono, optical and "coaxial dvd in" - which the connector doesn't look like your normal coax plug

You want to use optical if you have 5.1.

I could use optical, but in this instance it would mean runnign a THIRD type of cable through the loft, which I want to avoid.

If at all possible I'd like to take the audio from the coax cable and put it in the amp.

Why ? Digital coax is just as good. In fact, if you consider the journey the signal makes via optical, coax is better unless the cable length creates too much resistance. Coax is simply digital electrical down the wire. Optical is digital electrical, converted to light for down the optical, converted back to digital electrical for use by the amp.

I haven't seen one, but I wonder if it is possible to separate out the digital audio from the HDMI to go to a digi coax

I think by 'RF out' he's talking about the aerial type output, not a co-axial digital output from the sky box ? If this is the case he is barking up completely the wrong tree as the RF output doesn't carry stereo audio output, much less Dolby Digital ?

You can't take the audio from the RF out connection. You could take the optical out and get a converter to put that to digital, which would run over coax.

yep, the RF OUT on the SkyHD box, which sends the picture and sound (and IR remote control info)

I've worked out a way to convert the RF OUT cable into stereo L+R phono, but it'll need a small box and power supply. But I want to keep it as clean as possible, so I think I'll just use a long optical / toslink cable.

yeah, 15m away cable-wise

skyhd box is distributed around the house, and in this case goes to my HD projector and A/V amp.

I was thinking of using one of these to get the audio from the RF (coax) cable, but I've ruled it out in favour of using a long optical cable:
