Wasps nest in a hole in the ground :eek:
Found a wasps nest in our garden on Sunday. The little blighters have made home in a hole in the lawn. We spoke to the council and as they can not have anyone available until next week, suggested that we put some Nippon powder around the hole. Apparently they will take this to the queen and kill it. Not sure how effective this is. I just wanted to bury then straight away. Anything other I can try before I let the 'dozers move in? I'm going to empty a can of wasp killer into the hole and fill it if the nippon trick hasn't worked by tomorrow

Unless you have children, or they are particularly bothering you, I'd leave well alone until you get it deon properly. If you don't get it right, the buggers will swarm out at you. Not nice, been there, never again.

Got a 2 year old daughter so don't fancy them buzzing around while she's in the garden. Plus got some freinds coming over at the weekend with their daughters.
Like the Opitmax idea. Half a litre and a match.... Actually, I have some in a can for the lawn mower. This could be quite interesting.

Had one in the facias on my house, just above kitchen window. Waited until it calmed down abit, chucked loads of nippon in, sprayed wasp killer in there and then got out the liquid nails and filled the hole up, sorted !
Just do the same in your garden but fill it with earth.

OK. Plan of attack...
2000 hrs
Assemble equipment
a) Tourch
b) Petrol can
c) Match box and matches
d) Nippon powder
e) Wasp spray
2100 hrs
Move to start line
2101 hrs
Commence attack on enemy position
1) Fill hole with petrol and ignite
2) When (if) flames have died down, fill with Nippon powder
3) Spay with wasp killer
4) Fill hole with earth and pack down solid
5) Place brick over hole
2115 hrs
Retreat to rece point and observe wasp activity (if any)...
That should sort it
2000 hrs

I know it's a different matter if you have children, but we had a nest, at the bottom of the garden, under a plant pot, last year. Just left it alone. Occasionally I would go and take a look at the buggers and see how they behave (interesting if you like that sort of thing) and that was it. I left them alone, they left us alone.
Haven't come back this year. Quite miss them.

why not just get a tin bucket, drill a small hole in the bottom. get a funnel. place the bucket upside down over the hole, funnel in the petrol, chuck in a match. then put in some powder. the bucket should hold most of the wasps in there. unless they are mighty strong.

Do it the farmers way. Wait till dark and just put some diesel down the hole. that will kill it for sure. Just watch where you put the torch because if you shine it too much at the hole you will wake them up. They will think its light !!

I have a nest in the facia of my house at the moment.. just leaving it as not on the side of the house we open the windows on and not effecting us at the moment..
Been there at my Dad's place when he had similar and he thought he was clever by corking the hole.. they found another way out.. via the bedroom!!

Andew, while part of my would enjoy watching them as I too would find it interesting, I have a policy of kill on site when it comes to wasps. They are evil buggers who's only purpose on this panet is to sting you. 
Don't have any desiel and not sure about the effect on the grass if that's soaked into the soil. I think I'll go for a small amout of petrol so that it has a god chance of vaporising and will hopefully not ruin the soil.

Are you sure the stinging buzzers only have one escape exit? I like the sound of the "farmer's way" mentioned by wheeler_dealer - under the cover of darkness sounds good, and you'll get to see the full effect of the pretty petroleum flame display in the dark.

Have camcorder with infrared but doubt it will show much. Will try to take pics with digital camera..

Forgive me for a sensible suggestion but...
Firmly peg a section of mesh/cloth over the hole. Then simply pour boiling water down it. Several kettle fills should do it. Worked for me anyway.

these beasties aren't ickle black ants, they're big, highly mobile stinging buzzers with spiky tails and the will to use them at any opportunity. Petrol is a must in this situation.

Wasps eat all the flies in your garden - and they won't harrass you unless you harrass them. Are the chances of your daughter accidentally eating some Nippon/ Optimax etc greater than the chances of her being stung - which may hurt, but wouldn't result in a dash to hospital for poisoning....

All you need is Lynx Deodorant (Africa is my favoutire but any will do), six cans of Tennents super, some soothing wasp sting cream and a couple of cheap lighters, for added effect do it in the style of Apocalypse now, throw 'The End' by the Doors on to complete effect.
