Question for you !
I work in the telecomms industry and the company I work for is a supplier to a worldwide Mobile Phone company. As such we supply hardware and software to allow SMS and Prepaid calling, in this instance to a Cellphone operator in Nairobi, Kenya.
They have just renewed their support contract, and requested an extra man on site for 12 months. We already have one person onsite, and a number of the staff are ex employees of our company.
I have visited a number of times.. but never really thought about stopping until they renewed their contract with us......
My manager off the cuff asked me "would I be interested", initially I said "NO".... but thinking about it after a few beers..........
Q. Should I go for 12 months ?
If it were you, how much would it need to be worth ?
100K ?
Now Nairobi is very much of an ex-pat kinda place. After work everyone meets up for beers, and there is a right sense of communinity (and some very fit Swedish United Nations lasses )
hmmmmmm dilemma !

What are you waiting for? If you've got no serious commitments here then give it a crack. The Indian Ocean, Tanzania gameparks, Seychelles for a long weekend (not sure if they do direct flights though). I'd go for a quarter of the figure you mention if I was in a free position. Africans below the seriously corrupt level are lovely people and Africa itself gets into your blood. Also looks good on your CV David

One reason I wouldn't go...

It ain't the prettiest place on earth... parts of Nairobi that is. Outside the city is absolutely fantastic. They guys who work their right now live in a "secure" area with guard with machine guns on the gates.
Costs of living are cheap as chips as mentioned, the people locals who work at the company are fantastic, taxi drivers will rob you blind.. oh and don't even mention the roads and their suicidal driving !

Pehaps you should speak to people who have lived there.
I have family and friends from there and to be honest they said that they would not even invite me on a holiday (whether that's personal or not is another matter )
One of my mates' parents recently went out there and were involed in a car crash. They got looted whilst suffering from broken bones. It could have been much worse. They also decided to set a friend's car on fire for a laugh - well it was actually because he was not black and earns a fair wedge by their standards.
