My speeding punishment came through this morning!!

I was Gatso'd back in Dec last year and my slapped wrist came through this morning. I did 77 in a temp 50 zone and got £200 fine and 5 penalty points. This is my first ever driving conviction in over 12 years of driving.
The thing that pi$$es me of more than anything was that I wasn't in my STI Type-R but my £400 shed of a Cavalier.
Needless to say the Cavalier has now been scrapped!!!!

Dazza,
It was an SP50 and I pleaded guilty by post. The whole case took nearly seven months which I've been told is too long but I know nothing about the law so I don't know. I would rather bite the bullet than waste money taking them on.

My ALLEGDED offence was on 15th May, but they printed the NIP off on 19th June and i got it on the 21st June, and as this was the 1st sent, it appears to be invalid, as my solicitor told me "they have 14 days from date of ALLEGDED offence to send it to you".
checked it with 5ive O as we well.
And, as yet not heard a dickie bird from them, but still got everthing crossed just in case.....

my mates had a few of these letters and he just keeps throwing them in the bin, he said if he fills in the form saying it was him then hes convicting himself so in the bin they go.
after a few weeks he gets a letter asking for £20 admin costs, he pays it and off he goes points free!

craigfin,
just think yourself lucky you werent doing 3 mph more. Automatic 6 month ban for being 30mph over the limit!
My dad nearly got this.
2am in the morning and went through completely empty roadworks on the motorway. No one was working, but the Plod were hiding in an entrance and zapped him with a hand held.
79.5mph !! £300 fine and 7 points. I think he got a bigger fine and more points as he argued his case.

Does make me laugh all this.
I've just gone thro' the whole thing - 82 in a 50 zone, my first offence and I got 6pts £270 fine + £35 costs, fair enough.
They seem to have rough guidelines and then its up to how the judge is feeling on the day - all this 30mph over the limit = ban (did someone say 6months higher up?!) is IMO bollox. Yes, maybe likely but not certain.

If you are caught 30+ over the limit you are LIKELY to get some sort of ban. But its all down to the magistrate, I was caught doing 112 on the M54, i got 2 months and £250. If you beg and say you need to drive to work they will usually not ban you but give a big fine.
There really is no conmsistency at all in punishments.

A ban it seems isn't a certainty for 30 mph over the limit.
I was clocked at 133mph by a marked Range Rover parked in the hard shoulder and received 6 points and a £400 fine + costs + solicitors holiday pay.

i heard that if ya didn't send off the form, you were commiting another offense for not telling them. however i also heard that the maximum penalty for not telling them who was driving the car is 3 points and a smaller fine, so it might be worth it not telling them ?

Plenty of replies there,
Any ideas how much my insurance will go up? I phoned them about the points and they said it won't affect my insurance until the renewal date in May 04.
I had just reduced my premium by moving to a nice area of Plymouth, it went from approx £1100 down to £750 just by changing my postcode. Looks like a hike next year.
Craig.

I think the differences in punishment for Limit + 30 mph are all down to the magistrate.
But saying that i know 3 people who have been over the 30mph and got 6 month bans. The fact 2 of them were delivery drivers and needed their license was of no consequence. The magistrate told them they should have been responsible enough to stick to the limit. A bit of a b*stard!
Im sure its an automatic ban, but punishment is discressionary so you get less if the magistrate is reasonable.
