Question

Heres my situation:

We are getting married next year. We have written agreement from the venue that corkage for wine is x pounds and champagne is y pounds.

My question is that they havent specified what size/sort of champagne bottle size, so am i within my rights to expect to pay y pounds for a magnum, double magnum or even a jeroboam (4.5 litres ) ?

Dave

Hi Luke

It does state "per bottle" in the letter, but champagne comes in different named bottle sizes, of which "bottle" is a size (0.75 litres).

So are they talking per bottle (0.75 litres) or per bottle (i.e any size but physically one bottle).

I wouldnt bother..they are in the trade ..it was down to then to get that sorted out. They wouldnt stand a chance in an arguement about it.

I expect that they would argue that "bottle" means a standard 0.75l bottle, rather than meaning any sort of drinks container with a top on it... I can see this arguement as being fairly successful.

Then if they are proffesional about their trade they should have stated this... A wedding etc is one of the few times larger Champagne bottles could be used.

Is 'bottle' not the measure of amount of champagne.
i.e. 1 bottle is 750 ml and 2 bottles is 1.5l regardless of how many actual bottles hold the champagne.

i.e 1 magnum = 2 bottles = 2 x £6

The fact that it is stored in one actual bottle is irelevant(sp)

I think this is the case, or I could be talking pants

The agreement should be on what was implied in the contract, verbal or written i.e. what you understood(I think you clearly understood it to be per 75CL bottle). How would you feel if you agreed it was per Magnum then when you got married they said sorry its per bottle. I would not want to get into a ruck with wedding organisors over the price of corkage...its dangerous enough.

Hi cam

When it was agreed we didnt even think of different size bottles, so i guess we assume it was "a bottle" - the item, not the size.

I will be calling the venue later to discuss it i think

The bigger champagne bottles have different names, ie magnum, jeraboe (spelling???) etc

Suspect they mean standard bottle.

Why should it be any more? The cork is the same size!

Quite cheeky of them to hold you to a different price for champagne corkage!

Expensive wine can easily be more than cheap champagne but that is not the point...they are in business and need to cover their overheads and turn a profit.

You could re-negotiate a fixed amount to cover all of it though...

P.S. You better hope your wife-to-be doesn't apply your wedding vows (aka contract) so litterally

Dave

We paid the corkage but bought the Champagne direct from a lesser known house in France - friend went over & picked it up

Result was champers that flowed but at a rate per bottle a bit cheaper than the supermarkets but better

I think we had 180 peeps & working on 1/2 bottle per person Some on orange juice etc but even if thats OTT, you don't have to buy it for a long time afters & does pressies & partys too

Well it looks like they are sticking to their guns on y pounds per 0.75l bottle. Oh well.

Went to Rheims at the weekend to taste a load and will be going back in May to order it. Cheap as chips......

Was going to have Veuve, but then tried Jacquart Rose. Then we tried some stuff from a small family vineyard in the hills. WOW.

Will work out far less than the 46 quid per bottle the venue are charging for Veuve !!!
