Cool

A year ago (when Indonesia was having real troubles) it was cheaper to fly to Australia with Garuda-Indonesian Airlines on Business class than with the other airlines' economy. However, the travel agents suggested not going with them as we could get stuck in Jakarta.

I'm not sure what the stability of Indonesia is like currently, but I personally wouldn't use them. They were meant to be only slightly above the standard of Phillipine Airlines and they went bust a few years ago.

If you're flying to the far east I recommend Singapore Airlines. Don't use BA - they're cr*p.

I have flown from Bali on Garuda airlines and the service was pretty crap, poor food, no free drinks ! - no idea what their safety record is like. If you're flying down under I'd recommend Quantas as the service and food in long haul economy class was fantastic when I last used them.

ooo thanks for the info on Garuda... I'm booking a holiday in bali today! any other tips?

Definitely agree with singapore airlines - a very tidy airline. Air New Zealand surprised me too! really good food and more trolley-passes than singapore...

Paulie,

would agree with you about Air NZ, used them numerous times over the summer and they were top dollar.

Was looking for a budget option this time, Oz via Bali but might go with someone else now...

cheers

Qantas are very good

I prefer Singapore Airlines - good seats, better in-flight entertainment (in-seat screen for movies, games, telephone, etc.), free snacks and drinks whenever you want them - just ring and they'll warm something up and bring it to you.

I've heard that Cathay Pacific are good but haven't used them.

Going via here and Oz I have used Qantas (about 6 times), Singapore Airlines (about 7 times), Philiine Airlines (3 times - twice on Frst class as it was cheaper than Qantas economy, right until they went bust anyway), British Airways (3 times) - totally crap.

BA treat you like cattle, you get no in-seat screen, the food is bad, there is no separate airconditioning control for each seat - which might sound petty but you'd be surprised how useful it is on a long-haul flight.

Just IMHO of course... (well the BA bit is shared by a lot of people). World's favourite airline - my ***...
