Whisky/Spirits bottle sizes in airports vs shops
Anyone know why the more specialist whisky or spirits in general are mostly sold in 700ml bottles in the shops yet is sold in 1litre bottles at the airports?...Even in the arrivals area! (WorldDutyFree shop...which isn't duty free btw as its arrivals not departures LOL).
Try getting a 1litre bottle of Talisker elsewhere in the UK! (Not including Amazon ).

What gets me is the price differentials.
In France, in even small supermarkets, we get a HUGE range of whiskies in 700ml or 1 litre bottles at fantastic prices....often with an offer tacked on: buy at this price, get a second for half price.
Yet Cognac is dear, much dearer than in the UK. And two, maybe three brands.
Then here in the UK, the whiskies seem dear, while a litre of Courvoisier can be had sometimes for Ł24!

That's just the UK the alcohol tax. Bought a bottle of Auchentoshan...34Euros at WorldDutyFree in the departure hall of Alicante airport with a further 20% off any further purchases. Everything on the shelf is in 1litre bottles.
Meanwhile its Ł52 in the same shop (WorldDutyFree) on the exit corridor at Birmingham airport with a 2 for Ł90 offer (so Ł45). Again, everything in 1litre bottles.
Then I pop in to Marks and Sparks for essentials (OK a cream cake ) and all the whiskies in there are 700ml, like Tesco, Sainsbury etc.
I expect the price difference, but I just don't understand why I can't buy 1 litre bottles literally 10yards up the corridor.

Most distilleries are owned by big international/foreign conglomerates.
Doesnt explain why UK shops outside of airports only sell 700ml bottles.
The shop that sells 1litre bottles is behind WHSmith... You just walk behind the screen, no security to stop you as the customs exit is further down the corridor....

I was at the Killbeggan distillary in Dublin and a bottle of Conamaragh single malt was over €30 in the distillary shop, at Dublin airport duty free shop it was €36 and at my local super market here in Germany it was €19.99, for the same bottle in the same packaging.
