Pedelecs
Has anyone got one?
Went to look at orbea gain road bike today . Looks ok , not really used to big tube / heavy welds but anyway
Then came to lifting it.... Jesus it's a lump heavier than my 20 y/o steel mountain bike !
Is the motor really just there to heave the battery around on these things ?

The weight is irrelevant, my ti bike weighs 10kg, so 3 extra kg for a 250W boost is worth the extra weight many times over. There are many, virtually all manufacturers are making an electric bike.
They will be a great success in getting more people to ride It.takes them further and up steeper hills they would never dream of attempting.

100W + 200W rider. For a non dedicated cyclist, Id love to have that, even if it was only a 100w from rider, 200W going up a hill without breaking sweat

Gov (once brexited) should change the law to make pedal assist permissible up to 20mph from 15.5mph. 15.5mph in traffic is almost suicidal, whereas a bit more to say 20mph, would allow you a lot more ability to get out of trouble. BJ tried to change that when he was Mayor of London but got told he couldn't 'cos of Brussels. You would also get a lot more take-up of eBikes.
Pedal assist to 15.5mph is like hitting a brick wall once v max is achieved, especially on a 20kg bike with gearing designed to use that extra 250W

I want one for casual, non sweaty riding. There's a ******** in my town who rides a stupidly fast thing, like 50mph, ***** like him don't help.

The EU does not ban more powerful e-bikes, but requires an extra registration and a rider permit. Most European countries already had an applicable permit system for the old pedal motorbikes which you can ride from 14yo and there is a very small license fee, they usually have a mini number plate in a different format from mopeds, motorbikes and cars. The UK of course doesn't have such a permit, so the only existing option is for mopeds which require a provisional license and 16yo and also a much higher license fee.
Rather than create a new permit to allow powerful e-bikes in the UK, its easier to do nothing and blame the EU for banning them!

The point is, its not Europes fault that you can't get a powerful e-bike in the UK!
