Default Best war film

Oldies generally the best but still reckon Saving Private Ryan the best.

Just watching Full Metal Jacket for the first time. About half way through. So so up to now...

Das Boot.

For sheer tension, Das Boot. Fab.

But for realism, the gamechanger has to be SPR. Plus its spin-off series, Band Of Brothers and The Pacific.

Even grizzled, highly cynical veterans said it pretty much nailed what it was like (within the obvious limitations of not ACTUALLY killing people LOL).

Thought about this some more.

Der Untergang is absolute gripping stuff. You need to watch it in German with English subtitles to get best affect.

Another one I've just remembered is Downfall. It's subtitled. Quite harrowing, especially if you have young children......

Ganz's portrayal of Hitler is some of the best method acting I've ever seen.

U-571

Apart from the appalling theft of the story from the Allies - 'America takes all the credit and won the war' I love U-571 - its also a great home cinema workout - those depth charges..... woot! They certainly clear out the cobwebs from your subwoofer.

I have never seen Das Boot but also hear it a great submariner yarn

I didn't forget Downfall.
It's on my list above. Superb performance by Bruno Ganz, as @joz8968 mentions above.

How Ganz didn't win a Oscar for that performance is beyond me. Just goes to show what a crap setup the Academy really were.
