Claim is that they're for safety, i.e. numbers on site. But the usual mini hitlers use them for cracking down on lateness (one guy was questioned over being 11 seconds over 6am one morning - no I am not joking).

That really is the difference between the reader reading first time, or needing a second go at it!!!
I know of a car hire company where if you are 5 minutes late on the fingerprint reader, it costs you half an hour's wages.
Seen a couple of really good implementations of this, where a fingerprint grants access to respective parts of the building / site, allows you to pay for lunch / coffee in the canteen via pre-paid account and provided 2nd factor for authentication. Not sure that it was all a single integrated system, but felt like it.
Generates and stores a hash valued based on a partial finger print, so no storing biometric data.

That's taking the p*ss.
Our clock machine (digital) doesn't even keep accurate time! Gains about 30secinds per month. Worst of all it's made by Seiko....you'd have thought the one thing they could do us make an accurate clock!
