Default Road Tax, what's the best thing to do.

I've just had the usual letter that you get when your road tax is due for renewal, it says that my road tax is due to run out on the 30th September 2017.

What's the best thing to do, renew it before it runs out on the 30th September or do it on the 1st November, it's just I don't want to lose a month, I normally pay for 12 months in one go.

I thought it starts the day after the current tax is due to expire.

Easier to do with the renewal form, it has the reference number. Else you need to dig out V5 doc and quote number off that. Set up direct debit so you don't forget in future.

I guess the best thing to do is whatever suits you best and how much your road tax is.
I pay for mine monthly as its £520 annually, where I pay annually for my Daughters as its only £30

Pay it whenever you want before the date it expires, it only starts from the next day anyway (you won't be paying twice for the rest of September if you do it now).

I still have to renew the tax on my EV, but it costs £0.00 so it's easy to decide to do it annually!

I do the same, £45.50pm, it's not worth paying the full amount up front for the sake of £20 over the year

The renewal letter lets you do it straight away and starts from the first of the month so you won't loose anything

Just about to swap my A45 for another A45 and dealer wants to register the car before end of September (sales targets) so will I end up paying twice for that month?

Is this a brand new car?

If its a used car, just tell him to wait until the start of the month, or else he's paying the first months tax

I do DD for my cars, so simple and you don't need a reminder.

Bought a car a couple of weeks ago, went online with the V5C and within 2 mins was taxed again. Happy for that.

It was backdated to 1 September, so in answer to the swap car scenario, get dealer to give you £ off for the September tax or he can wait.
