I assume you mean for vehicles. Ideally you need to get one that can read all codes, not just the general ones and be able to clear errors on all subsystem s

I've had to get a factory diagnosis system to read and clear codes for my pickup truck. The advanced codes are locked away from most reader/ scanner's

I got the Ford vcm II plus software. Ford want $900/year for license. Sod that cost, was a bit of a faff to set up on pc but £160 all in I have full factory diagnosis system. I needed it to clear an error code on my light circuit which then disabled all headlights. Only way to make light work again is to do factory scan and then clear codes

It depends on how much youre willing to spend really, if moneys no object then snap on verus pro is a good bit of kit and does everything youll need it to, failing that for about a grand then the launch is pretty good too,

Snap on scanners aren't what they used to be, often the software isn't as up to date as other scanners. Launch or Maxisys are great value and do more than Snap on. We have several scanners at work aswell as lap top based software, and I would not advise anyone to buy a Snap on scanner, they have been well and truly left behind by the completion. MaxiSys with the pass through interface will do pretty much evrything and is the best value for money.

Bought mine off eBay £15 and reads codes and can be deleted. Works a treat, even works on Vauxhalls and doesn't even list them on options list.

The snap on verus pro is what i end up using when other scanners cant do want i want them too, othe snap on stuff is crap, i.e solus, ethos etc etc but the same cant be said for the verus range, albeit the price reflects this as theyre iro £6k to buy

I'v got one and it's not as good as Maxisys which only cost £2500. Like I said snap on have been well and truly been left behind by the competition. Don't get me wrong it's a good product and very user friendly we use ours every day but other scanners which are cheaper can do more. If I was to buy one it would be Maxisys with pas through interface.

Hi I bought a cable and disc off ebay but cant seem to make the damn thing read, it stated it could read Impreza Turbo 1999 yr. If anyone has an alternative that might diagnose my EML coming on i would really appreciate a weblink or named device.

Best downloading ecu explorer, it wont let you read and write roms but will allow ECU fault code reading,
if you want to progress on to live Data logging you will need Romraider.

Not sure what you mean by Maxisys? Sorry not an expert in this but was hoping a simple reader from the bay someone had used before might help me out!

A MY99 classic is not OBDII compliant and you will only be able to read the codes using the diagnostic connectors unless you have SSM (Subaru Select Monitor)

Thanks to JDM_Stig advice. Loaded ecu explorer used vag com lead adjusted for SSM and away we go. Read codes but indicated no current ones but showed 2 historical ones. So still don't know why EML comes on at first turn key for a few mins. jaygsi what reader are you using, as this may be easier than laptop, cable ++++ etc. Do you have link from the "bay" . Mines a 00yr classic and it appears to work.
