Default Car Tax Changes

I didn't know that the Vehicle Tax rates are changing from 1st April 2017 for new cars. Any car registered after the 1st April 2017 the new rates will apply! After the first year, any car that has any CO2 emissions will pay £140.

If you had a low emissions cheap run-around of 99 g/km CO2 as your shopping car for instance:-

Existing tax scheme (from March 2001) - £0 per year for the rest of its life as it is based on when it was registered!
New tax scheme (from April 2017) - £140 per year

So run it for 5 years and that's costing you £700 extra in tax.............if you are thinking of buying a low CO2 car soon then buy it in March 2017 because it will be in demand when you sell it on as well................due to the tax saving.

There are penalties for cars costing over £40000 list and also attract an additional £310 per year for the first 5 years on top of the standard £140.

On the plus side you can have a car with over 255 g/km CO2 in the 2nd year will only cost £140 if it didn't cost over £40k new The first year though is an eye watering £2000............which I know the dealer usually throws in the tax so expect new car prices to go up to compensate!

To be fair, it's sensible that we all pay the same rate of TAX for driving on our roads, as we all use them. So why should someone driving a Prius contribute less than someone driving an RS6 etc, even through the Prius driver may drive more miles a year.

Not sure about the new car sales Tax, especially after £40k, as most cars most petrolheads buy cars these days, around or over this figure. But saying that, I was paying around £475 a year on an R8. Expensive, yes, but in the grand scheme of things, not really.
