yes that is the easy solution - and I suspect the one the EU would agree too

but totally unacceptable to the DUP - who want a hard brexit but no hard border

the EU position paper is here

https://ec.europa.eu/commission/publ...-settlement_en

the EU has asked for a framework to be agreed, a methodology on finalising the accounts - no £ amount has been mentioned by the EU negotiators only in our febrile press

it was produced over 6 months ago - to my knowledge we have not produced anything

lets take one of the areas in the document where we have made commitments

the Horizon projects - jointly funded, staffed and resourced projects from studies into diabetes to gravitational waves

this is a link to the UK coordinated ones

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...&headers=false

the below is a screen shot of the first 20 or so - the spreadsheet runs to hundred odd lines - hundreds of projects

so re these projects who pays the ongoing wages, who pays for the lab space and equipment's etc etc etc

do we want to still collaborate in these, how are the outcomes shared, who owns the new technology they produve etc etc etc

and those are just one small part of settling commitments we freely entered into as members

The UK legal counsel ripped to shreds any basis that the UK should continue payments to the EU after 2019. The EU hasn't come back on their wish list.

Barnier never mentions legal but talks in words of honour. They have no legal stand point, well not that are willing to publish. On that basis who would want to pay any more than is legally required.

Irrelevant, my good man.

The present shaky economy is being CAUSED by us faffing about.

The economists are getting windy, as they do, as we FAIL to push back against the outrageous demands of the EU.

But wait....watch the German industries pressure Merkel and Co once it's obvious we are moving towards no deal.

I will do you a deal Alcazar.

If on 1st Jan 2020 the UK is in a better position post-Brexit it ever was pre-Brexit I will never set foot in the UK again.

If on that date the UK is in a worse off position then you sell your house in France and never set foot in the EU again.

This is an easy bet for someone as sure as yourself.

ahah no

we have said we have commitments - just read May Florence speech, and Boris's

but we have not listed them

that's why the EU are laughing at us (in despair)

so to recap we say we have commitments - when the EU ask us to list and itemise them so accounts can be settled

and we say NO

The 20bn was for access after we left for 2 years and a promise to pay what we legally owe. Not their wish list.

Silly

My beef with the EU isn't about living there, or any particular country.
It's about unelected control.
It's about them ignoring rules which we follow.....no EU rules, we no longer have that excuse for stupidity.
It's about waste.
It's about propping up ex-Commie states while our old and sick go ignored.

And as for
If on 1st Jan 2020 the UK is in a better position post-Brexit it ever was pre-Brexit
"ever was"?????

I'd be daft to take that. But we will be better off, trust me.

The parliament is elected, and you should read up about how the EU is structured and how it operates. You may not like it, and it may not be the same as the way we run our country, but it doesn't mean it's undemocratic.

This is a British issue, not an EU one. What you are saying is that you don't like the EU because some of its member states don't follow the rules. We can also do that if we wish, surely you can see that?

And the commissioners? The president?

Bit of a Johnny come lately to this thread?
As I've pointed out before, if we are out, we no longer have to follow their last rule and regulation. AND OUR GOVERNMENT WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO HIDE BEHIND THE EU for every silly thing it enforces. So we can vote them gone if they start.

Of course we have, but not on the scale of the EU. Looked at their pensions? Remember the wine lake? The butter mountain?

The commission is accountable to the parliament, which is elected. The president is not some dictator, you know, he can't just order the EU to bend to his will.

How democratic is the House of Lords? How representative is the House of Commons with respect to voter share?

Try looking at how things work instead of repeating parrot fashion the inescurities and xenophobia of the Leave campaign.

This statement show an unbelievable amount of naivety and bias. We live in a two party system, both of which have systematically let the country down, lied to us, enforce unpopular legislation.

Well, the EU is a lot bigger than us, waste is relative What I find odd is that you criticise the EU for waste yet not us, it's double standards. Waste is a scourge for all, but not easily fixed.

Really showing your age and prejudices there, 'ex-Commie' states. When East Germany joined West Germany, it was a huge burden on the West, but now Germany is the strongest nation in Europe. It is in our interests to have an economically strong and united Europe, so it's more of an investment.

As for us doing better, perhaps? Possibly. In reality? Unlikely.

Seems to be doing a damned good impersonation of a dictator at present, LOL

Why is that relevant? It's OURS. We don't want ruling by the EU, and we will be if we stay. Look at how they are beahving now? "You can't talk trade until you pay what WE say you owe for leaving?

Irrelevant. If we leave, we don't have to obey their petty rules and tregs.
So ANY UK govt will have nothing/no-one to hide behind if they start enforcing crap the population hate...and will quickly be voted out. Or down in the house.

Agreed.
Except that why should WE, as nett giver, pay for their poor housekeeping? We have enough on paying for our own.

So the EU is bad yet the House of Lords (both of which can be described as "un-democratic ") is fine simply because it's "ours". You've got to love that logic

Anywho, has anyone figured out what we're going to do with all our nuclear sites/equipment once we're out of Euratom?

wow.

So most of the nuclear industry is of the opinion leaving Euratom is going to cause all sorts of trouble, yet some bloke from the Internet believes we should just revert to "what we did before we joined" (a time that bought us such joys as the Windscale fire). Couldn't make it up.

"Of the opinion"?

Like the opinions of those who said we'd have to have an emergency budget?
That it would cost every man, woman and child in the UK £3000?
That banks would all move abroad as soon as we voted out?
Like those opinions.

Honestly, you probably believe there are fairies too?
