Default UK Citizen?

If my son, a UK Citizen, marries an American girl would she be allowed to come and live permanently in UK?

Thanks, David

Yes, but they need to check the current requirements as it keeps changing and there are eligibility requirements. It'll be on the gov.uk website.

I believe it first requires a "partner of a settled person visa". And then need to be in the UK for ten years to apply for permanent settlement.

I have two friends married to non-EU partners. The process has changed with both of them. The first one only needed to be here for 2 years for permanent residency, now its 10 years

Main one for the first visa is proving you have the financial means and living arrangements.

I certainly know that marrying a Canadian Citizen only seems to allow you to use the spousal sponsorship route, which is probably one of the easier ways to obtain PR if you don't have it. Apart from that, you don't get PR or Citizenship.

I suspect the UK is similar to Canada when it comes to trying to get residency.

One other thing. She should check into wether she's allowed to keep her US Citizenship, if of course she wants to obtain UK Citizenship. I know Canada allows Dual Citizenship - as that's what I have - but the US, as to be expected, is a little bit funny about this kind of thing.

My friend married someone from America and it was a nightmare, he couldn't live over there because he had to earn over 20k, she couldn't come over here either, they had to live in another EU country for i think 2 years, then she could apply to live in UK. Worked out in the end though.
