If a used car dealer does the HPI check are they comprehensive and to be trusted?

I would have thought so as they won't want to buy a car that has outstanding dept, stolen etc

No point in a cheap check as they won't tell you everything. Pay the full £20 to official hpi site. Well worth it.

I nearly lost my trade in car, £7k of my cash and a new car I was trying to buy as a text check didn't tell me about outstanding finance. Paid the £20 official check just before I went to do the deal. I was lucky. Would never use a text check again!

This is £9.95 for the middle service which includes a finance check. Cover up to £10k.

It depends on what check they do.

They may only check the basics, outstanding finance, written off, etc.

Then you can add things like NMR or National Mileage Regsiter to check for mileage discrepancies.

Personally, if you're going to actually buy the car, ie, hand over the money, pay for a full HPI check. If you're just trying to save some time by checking it out before travelling a long way to see it, a cheaper one will do the basics but I'd still recommend doing a full one before parting with any cash and driving it away.
