Default Gumtree, Preloved and the likes

Do sites like Gumtree and Preloved actually work?

I have advertised some dining furniture on Gumtree and so far in 5 days the total views has been.... wait for it..... 3!!!

I don't mind that it hasn't sold, but there can be no one on the site if has had no more than 3 views.... in fact one of them was probably me

Is Ebay the only place you can sell anything now?

When I come to buy a mobile phone (I loathe contracts, so use giffgaff and buy my phones outright) there's only two places I use - Gumtree and forums that I frequent.

To answer your question directly, the exposure is, as you've correctly identified, more limited compared to eBay and those that do go on there may be after something within a certain distance. If you're selling something which is likely to have a niche interest (such as dining furniture), that will slim down your potential reach even further.

Stick it in the non Scooby related section of the sale section. You probably won't sell it but will get more views :-D

Gumtree sounds quite derelict, and I know some people that have bought pets from Preloved. I loved the name for the site in terms of little, preloved animals, but some constantly provide clarification that as it's a dating site as well for previously loved humans, they just bought a dog, cat or a hamster from there- nothing else.

Anyway, IMO ebay is your best bet, Chris.

If someone wants it they will contact you. Its always about having the right product for the right audience.
I had an Escort MK4 RS Turbo convertile for sale. Ebay was coming up with crap and I stuck it on Gumtree. It was gone the next day!

No in this case it's about having some sort of audience full stop! There's metaphorical tumbleweed blowing through these sites. I will cart it on to Ebay and get my pants pulled down for the fees, but what can you do.

It was so much easier when you just stuck it in Exchange and Mart!

Never used gumtree due to all the fake ads etc.
But I did join preloved (think it was £5 for the year) to buy my pup.

Hate eBay (selling) as there are more time wasting muppets than on here....I've just bought a nice tag off eBay though .

I use Gumtree to sell and occasionally buy electronic type stuff (iPhone / iPad). Good in London (when I'm working there) pretty derelict outside.

I've noticed that with gumtree you get a lower class of people. No offence intended btw....

LOL it was very brave of you to say that, and you gave me the mental images of this sort there.............

But Hodgy says no, so I'll trust him because he bought his posh bike with a vicar basket from there.

I've had some bargains off Gumtree, including 1,000's of records and an electric ride-on for my son. Always collect in person though.

Lol, it was only £60 and was for my daughter

Due to the high student population and bike ownership in Cambridge, plus the end of the summer term - now is a good time to pick up a bargain bikewise

Better still give him the bike too, then he won't have to sleep in a doorway, he can make rat pies and create a company called Rat Pie Express sell them around cambridge feeding other homeless people,, then one day he'll have a big house and let people stay there for free.

I've sold a few items on Gumtree and never had any problems so far. They were all collected in person though, no posting to some Nigerian king living in exile in Scunthorpe.
I did sell a phone on ebay the other day, clearly marked as faulty/broken. And the winning bidder contacted me after saying he didn't realise the phone was faulty.

I'm not black and a king - although the latter is up for interpretation

Sold loads on Gumtree, moved some large rocks from my back garden last week and put them on gumtree just hoping that someone may want them. They all went straight away.
