Gumtree, Preloved and the likes
Do sites like Gumtree and Preloved actually work?
I have advertised some dining furniture on Gumtree and so far in 5 days the total views has been.... wait for it..... 3!!!
I don't mind that it hasn't sold, but there can be no one on the site if has had no more than 3 views.... in fact one of them was probably me
Is Ebay the only place you can sell anything now?

When I come to buy a mobile phone (I loathe contracts, so use giffgaff and buy my phones outright) there's only two places I use - Gumtree and forums that I frequent.
To answer your question directly, the exposure is, as you've correctly identified, more limited compared to eBay and those that do go on there may be after something within a certain distance. If you're selling something which is likely to have a niche interest (such as dining furniture), that will slim down your potential reach even further.

Gumtree sounds quite derelict, and I know some people that have bought pets from Preloved. I loved the name for the site in terms of little, preloved animals, but some constantly provide clarification that as it's a dating site as well for previously loved humans, they just bought a dog, cat or a hamster from there- nothing else.
Anyway, IMO ebay is your best bet, Chris.

It was so much easier when you just stuck it in Exchange and Mart!

Never used gumtree due to all the fake ads etc.
But I did join preloved (think it was £5 for the year) to buy my pup.
Hate eBay (selling) as there are more time wasting muppets than on here....I've just bought a nice tag off eBay though .

But Hodgy says no, so I'll trust him because he bought his posh bike with a vicar basket from there.

But the money hodgy has just wasted on a bike could of fed a homeless ex service man
Now hodgy....did you 'really need' the new mode of transport?
Btw I'm only pulling on your lad....I'm not trying to wind you up

Due to the high student population and bike ownership in Cambridge, plus the end of the summer term - now is a good time to pick up a bargain bikewise

Better still give him the bike too, then he won't have to sleep in a doorway, he can make rat pies and create a company called Rat Pie Express sell them around cambridge feeding other homeless people,, then one day he'll have a big house and let people stay there for free.

I've sold a few items on Gumtree and never had any problems so far. They were all collected in person though, no posting to some Nigerian king living in exile in Scunthorpe.
I did sell a phone on ebay the other day, clearly marked as faulty/broken. And the winning bidder contacted me after saying he didn't realise the phone was faulty.

I'm not black and a king - although the latter is up for interpretation

Sold loads on Gumtree, moved some large rocks from my back garden last week and put them on gumtree just hoping that someone may want them. They all went straight away.
