Default "Back to the future," in a JDM STI Ver-9 Widetrack

The third instalment in the saga that was-

- https://www.scoobynet.com/middlesex-...r-wrc-ltd.html

“Here we go again” I hear everyone cry!!
Each time its different & this time too: different budgets; different requirements from the car; different modding budgets; differing attitude on my part & most importantly I’m gaining experience and having fun along the way!

Without going into the previous threads too much, but: “How I came to buying a JDM Sti Ver9 Widetrack?

The first Scooby, the daddy of them all, was as you know a mint Litchfield MY06 Hawkeye Spec C, undoubtedly my favourite, which I owned for almost 2 years & modded along the way. It was a great car but ultimately it became harder & harder to be used everyday. Mainly because it was in such good condition, showcar condition that it was not right to use a special edition everywhere from Tescos to B&Q & pick up numerous knocks & scratches. It also had a tidy sum tied up in it which I had better use for at the time & the more hardcore mods I did the less an everyday proposition it became.

That was replaced soon after with a Ver6 Type R WRC Ltd. In truth, I had an itch for a 2 door Classic & for a lot less money than the Spec C I was back in a Subaru! It was also in very good condition but as Classics are over 10 years old inevitably things do need replacing. My thread above documents that car’s progress for almost a year of ownership. But ultimately it had to go too. A 2 door car wasn’t as easy to live with as I thought especially with a little one to transport to & from Nursery. It was even more hardcore to live with than my Spec C; it required more TLC than a newage & tell you the truth there’s not much that comes close the twin scroll JDM engine with its silky smooth 6 speed gearbox! (The Type R chassis felt old skool in comparison to a JDM Hawkeye. Though its not really a fair comparison as one is a lot older design than the other). As well as gearbox; engine/turbo response, the newage chassis is so much more composed & harder to unsettle than a Classic. Some may say the Classic is therefore more fun, but that’s a matter of opinion. What I missed a lot was the supernatural levels of grip offered only, IMO by the DDCD-Auto diffs. Therefore there was only a couple of cars that ticked all those boxes: either a MY06 JDM Hawkeye Sti or a MY05 JDM Blobeye Sti (widetrack).

The difference between the two afore mentioned cars are only price & headlights as far as I am concerned. Do I spend an extra £3.5 to £4.5k for a Hawkeye or go with a widetrack blob? I took the money & went for a blob!
I think at this moment it fits my criteria perfectly: comfy 4 door newage; proper rear seats with a centre armrest; airbags; sound deadening; easy to drive, quiet (well now it is thanks to Alan & Jim,- another long story!); twin scroll turbo; 6 speed box; DCCD with Auto as it’s a widetrack; cost almost half as what I sold my Spec C for but with same engine/gearbox/turbo (very slight difference between VF36/37). Im not worried if it gets the odd scratch or ding as its not a ltd edition mint show car. I also know quite a bit about these cars now as its almost the same as my Spec C. I know which mods are worth doing & which are not. So after that brief (cough cough!) introduction let the thread begin!

On a sidenote, well in fact its more than a sidenote, its actually the most important bit in all this! I was actually considering for a while to leave the Suabru fold & either just get a family car e.g. a Honda CRV etc or switch to either R32 Golf or an RX8 as my performance car. After talking to a few MSOC members, (notably Budgie & Maggy) I was shown the error of my ways & reminded of what the club & its members are all about & what I would do without it. To be specefic Budgie "Your not gona wana wake up on a Sunday morning and start polishing your RX8 or Golf"!!!!! lolol What he meant was soon proved very true the following week when MSOC members went out of their way to help me get my new Impreza sorted to use before the start of the week Monday: see thread below-

https://www.scoobynet.com/middlesex-...pe-dramas.html

Here's the only pic at the moment:

The spec so far:
MY05 JDM Sti Ver 9 Widetrack with just under 37k on the clock
Twin Scroll VF37 Turbo with an adjustable actuator?
Usual JDM forged engine bits & nitrided crank etc & Brembo brakes & red sweeping dials
Factory Xenons & Rear Tints
Walbro fuel pump
Sard Fuel Pressure Regulator
VTA breather system (soon to be changed to baffled catch can)
Greddy boost Controller (soon to be removed)
3" Bellmouth decat downpipe & Fujitsubo Giken jap exit exhaust (soon to be finished to full 3")
Remapped by Steve Simpson (soon to be remapped by FB Tuning )
STI rear upper strut brace
Front lower lip spoiler
Clifford G5 alarm
RE070's all round
New Battery already fitted (Thanks John)

First round of mods next week with Richard @ FB Tuning:
Millers CFS Engine Oil
Motul Inugel Coolant
EBC Blue NDX brake pads all round
Sort out breather system

Next visit wil be:
Finish exhaust to full 3" at joint & heatwrap downpipe properly
Remove Greddy Boost Controller & fit 3 port instead
Fit APS Dual dump valve
Change air filter to Cosworth panel filter
Adjust actuator, maybe
Custom map by FB Tuning

As well as above I shall no doubt be adding my own personal touches: no Jim no more stickers & Musical Air Horns!!

And for those involved in sorting the downpipe drama's I have renamed us the pit-crew, and I have a text from Ricky promising to buy all of the pit-crew a shiny new Spec-R catch can

I'm looking forward to diverting my efforts from my car, as I'm sure my wife is, because it's easier to spend someone else's money

Looking forward to seeing the progress with this one Ricky, looks like a nice tidy car, let's see if you can keep it that way.

John: Its another slippery slope I feel

Wiley: Thanks mate its Crystal Grey, in setting sunlight it looks a bit bronze. Same colour as Alan's blobeye

Mags: Cheers mate, you gave me the final push I needed to go see it!!

Omar: Thanks for the catch can advice, Im ideally looking for a baffled one, Madhammers is'nt unfortunatley. But Im sorting a group buy on a 3 port baffled one, only problem its made for classic, (to sit on chassis leg) so may have be creative in finding a place to fit it on a newage?

Me liking very much is the wing standard? Looks MAHOOSIVE!!

Please do not use the same technique that you used to get rid of the WRX of the back of the R'.

I have a can of panel wipe sitting ere let me now when you need it!

Russ!

Ps. I'm guessing your not wanting any whiteline bits for the classic now then?

Thanks Russ, I need to that wipe to get rid off the WRX residue! Wing is std STI wing, funnily enough its lower than my Ver 6 Type R wing.

Might need the Whiteline ALK for newage Ver9 Russ??
