Thanks some useful info there. Just ordered some of the recommended paint cans.
For the black primer anything specific? I have seen some called etching primer... is this better?

Only use etch primer when you have a complete bare metal surface. So if you're sand blasting the wheels then use etch primer on the bare metal then normal grey primer, then high build if required. Be very careful with etch primer because it will react with existing paint and primer so if your wheels are not stripped then etch primer will make a right mess of them and lift the sanded edges of old paint.

You're better off sanding the wheels or scotch bright them, then simple grey primer lightly for a couple of coats, then a few layers of normal gloss black to seal then a few layers of the bronze until you get the desired shade.

Think I did scotch bright, 2 grey primer, 3 black and about 6 bronze. They are faultless and not chipped at all with daily use. Look like a professional job.

Thanks for the advice...


I have some polished Rota GRAs and planned to mask them off and only change the polished face to bronze... any extra advice there?

There will be no benefit in just spraying the face of the wheel as you won't see that detail unless right up close. You might as well scotch bright the whole wheel and spray it all.

My lad is keen to help and I reckon it's worth a shot...The graphite colour on all the rest of the wheels is still in great condition. If it's a disaster then I have a mate who can do a pro job on the whole wheels so will probably go that route.

Gotta be worth a shot then. Always good to try something different.

That should only take 2-3 weeks to mask each wheel up for paint!
