But isnt the chassis/suspension components different? The blob came on 17s as standard, and is fine on 18s. The hatch/My15 came on 18s as standard, surely 19s wouldnt be too much of a leap?...


I'm realy tempted with one of these. Trying to stretch myself and see if I can get one! Are they good enough to keep standard?
Whats the attitude of Subaru UK on warranties & trackdays? Also whats their view if I changed the exhaust?...

Yes the components are different and improved but i wouldnt say to the extent where the ride would be any better on 19s. Handling i suspect wouldnt be affected too much. If you want the looks then go for 19s, as i said before, the car is about function not form.

Too slow and flat standard, especially in 6th gear, it needs a remap for that added chunk of bhp and more importantly torque.

Invalidated You would need to get something from a dealer prepared to give you a 3rd party warranty that would cover an exhaust swap of their choosing. Mangoletsi might do one in the future, although i've not seen or heard of anything concrete from them as yet.

I think the member who just got rid of his (Thehulkster) and went back to his old focus RS should of at least had a ride in a mapped one like yours, could of been a game changer.

How big a difference is it over a standard one?

Yeah the stickers came off fine apart from the front splitter which is being replaced.i think the map makes a massive difference.

I'd buy one of these tomorrow if I had ANY confidence that Subaru had resolved the problem..... which for me would require an engine design overhaul (or a return back to the 2ltr).

I was so close at the start of last year to buying a previous version saloon. I spoke to the dealer and asked what the crack was with the engines now. They said "it's all been sorted now". Yeah right!

I sincerely hope you guys don't get issues.

I'm just so tempted, but I know it will probably end in pain.

But we do know that the internals are now using refined materials (whatever that means ) Anyway they don't all go pop, there's plenty of the older generation 2.5s out there on 70-90K mileages. Any net forum will highlight the bad cases.

Yes it probably would end in pain for someone like you, as i assume you would want to raise the power and track it. The 2.5 is ok up to about 350bhp, no more and tracking it will only increase the risk of failure, well that goes for any roadcar engine really. The 2ltr is a stronger unit and was over engineered for the time, we were spoiled. They would never go back to it due to the emission laws they are now under. As for a redesign that has already been done to a certain extent with the DIT FA20 motor, but there are reports of those failing at 20-30K mileages in some BRZ's due to rod bearing failure and/or bent rods. Those motors are being used in the WRX and JDM WRX to.

Rod bearing failures (pot 3) are now being reported in the US on the 2015 STI (after some digging around today).

Anyway..... hope it does you good. They look better and better, the more and more I look at them.

The dealer told me as long as it's running less than 350 the engine will be fine. Added to that its under 3 yr warranty and il be handing mine back then the issues don't concern me. If I was buying as a long term prospect I would be a bit more concerned.

Sources? Knowing the yanks, those cases were probably run on their weak fuel or autocrossed to death before exploding on their way home

Im with you there - last year was in florida in a mustang and the best quality fuel on offer was 97 ron as super premium unleaded. If they binned the jungle juice might get better results. Watched a vid on youtube of a stock sti running 230bhp on a dyno #sh!tefuel

Does anyone know if the PCD is the same as the 2006 WRX STI and the 17 inch wheels would fit as i have 2 sets from my old car i could use on track days.

Let's just keep our fingers crossed, you never know, the reliability issues of old maybe long gone.

I know there has now been a few reports of engine problems from the US but what car doesn't have issues, they are still very low and relatively small compared to others.
