bugeye wrx sti headlight conversion
Hey up,
Has anyone converted their standard wrx bugeye headlights to the sti version?
I believe the wiring has to be changed or modified to allow this to work?
Any advice/info will be much appreciated!

Yes you need to change the wiring as the STI lights have seperate main and high beams whereas the WRX has a standard H4 combined high/main beam.
It's not too difficult if you use UK spec STI lights. However, if you use JDM spec lights with a HID the wiring becomes a little more complex. There is a guy in Canada (Wagon_Ho on here I think but I can send you a link to his site when I get home) who makes the looms so you can go back to standard afterwards, but I made my own (converted to HiD). Just to complicate matters I had to use Nissan ballasts as the subaru ones weren't supplied with my lights.
Also the wiring and the switch for the beam adjuster are completely different and I have not found a way of modifying yet. I will probably buy that part of the loom from the guy in Canada if my headlight alignment fails the MOT and I need the adjuster to sort it, otherwise I'm not overly bothered.
Looks much better IMHO

How do I find out if they are uk or jdm headlights? They are arriving in the post tomorrow, I should have asked prior to purchasing them. Im pretty certain they aint hid ones.

I got wiring harnesses from here.
Subaru Impreza Parts, Pics and Pricing
They make the job straightforward. If they are Non-HID ask for this harness;
Bugeye STi without HID, but enabling so the main beam and dipped beam
(both high and low beam) stay on together.

If they are the bulb will be different, it's quite obvious when you take them out, the connection is a bulky bayonet style connection to start with, and it has what I can only describe as an external element. Also you'll have the yellow warning sticker as seen on my second pic.

I changed my WRX lights for a set of JDM HID`s on my bug, The headlight leveller is a different switch, The standard one is a 4-pin but you need a 6-pin as the headlights leveling works via a voltage current, I made my own loom from the switch to the drivers headlight then from there to the passenger light underneath the front grill, I realise this thread is now over 3 years old but hey someone else might want to do it

You'll need to identify the 2 switched earths and run them to the main beam and HID ballast. Then you'll need to split the live and feed it to each bulb/ballast independently

This is what your standard wrx pins do as you look at them if it helps.
.................... low beam earth
High beam earth ............ Live feed for both beams
lol it wouldnt come out as i did it but you get the idea.

Mine are set so high and dip are on together otherwise you get a dead spell when switching down from high to dip, the only issue is that the dips come on with flash to pass however to stop this involves all kinds of wiring and diodes under the steering column with wires run all the way from there to the lights. Mine have been on the car for around 5 to 6 years now all on original bulbs.
Basic wiring is:
Live feed spilt to high and the ballast (dip).
High beam neg to high neg
Ballast neg to chassis (otherwise it will switch off with high beam)
I've also rewired the units so my sidelights (led) are in the indicator position, indicators in sidelight.

thanks everyone, got the lights trial installed and indicators and sidelights just plug straight in.
Level setting i'll leave for now.
Just got to figure if I can mount the original hid brackets in original position on the wagon, not quite sure how they go, so this is my next problem, I want to try and be as OEM as possible.
Also need to find a bit of STI loom with plug for the Main beam as I want to try and do this properly.
in future I am putting STI engine in, so may change large sections of loom over and put proper STI light wiring in.

The OE position is a PITA. I normally take the large bracket of the ballast and bend the two top tabs on the smaller bracket over (you'll need a vice) and then drill two holes into the lip behind the lights. The ballast then sits snugly behind the fog lights

Search ebay for 9005 or 9006 light fittings. One has the right grooves for the D2 bulbs, the other needs modding slightly to open them up. They can be spliced in and used. I would send you a link, but I'm in work and fun is banned

mine are just sat behind the lights. seem pretty secure.
mine got hardwired in and seem to work fine.
altho where about is the bit to mess with the leveling? could do with lowering mine a tad.

The 6-pin sockets are for the headlamp levellers. The 3-pin fittings need to be adapted with the individual earths for each light fed to the dipped and main beam and the live split to feed a live to each light.
