Default Battery clamp WTF?

I changed the battery on my '03 blob 8 years ago - nuff respect to the Halfords calcium battery lasting 8 years with car living outdoors! Replaced just now. I remember the two long hook screw things being a tw@t to tighten then. Now I just can't get them to grip grip on to the bottom of battery box. Tempted to drill a couple of holes in bottom to make them grip on so I can tighten nuts. Am I missing something simple??

It doesn't grip on the botton of the battery tray...there are holes in the body for the rods to locate in to.

There is a very nice lady in local Halfrauds. This has crossed my mind.

I'm sure she would get your rod in the hole

Yes this would make a lot more sense. Presumably below the indents in bottom of plastic tray. Must have got them in last time.
