Default Widening A2 - Bangor/Belfast

I heard on the BBC news this morning that they're going to widen the stretch of road form Tillysburn to M3 to 3 lanes.

Work won't start before 2014

Thats going to cause complete havoc on that bloody road

There is "nearly" a third lane currently as they've got the two way cycling lane.
Why not just get rid of that - you rarely see it being used anyway

Talking of road works - who would you raise complaints with in relation to traffic lights.

There are far too many on the Bangor/Belfast route, and some of them could possibly be done away with during peak times.
Plus - ban right turns at several locations on that road too.

I don't think too many would object if it increased the flow of traffic (which it would)

One of the maddest stretches of road about.
There should be plenty of chaos during those roadworks.
Just realised myself on Saturday night the amount of traffic lights on it as well, maybe its because I got a red light at nearly every single one.
Surely any concerns about light should be raised with the Roads Service NI

they have been talking about this for the past 50+ years, for all of the anoraks out there History - Northern Ireland Motorway Plans - Northern Ireland Roads Site

1964 Plans

The 1964 plan introduced an incredible number of motorway proposals. It was announced in the House of Commons by Northern Ireland Minister of Home Affairs William Craig in February 1964. As you can see from the map below it was considerable and included the following elements:

* A Belfast Urban Motorway encircling the city centre connecting to the M1, M2, M3 and M4.
* The M1 extended all the way to Dungannon
* The M2 extended to Coleraine via Antrim and Ballymena
* The M3 extended to Bangor
* The M4 unmodified (Ormeau Road to Carryduff)
* An M5 running from the M2 at Greencastle to Carrickfergus
* An M6 running from the M5 at Whiteabbey to Larne
* An M7 running from the M3 at Holywood Arches to Dundonald
* An M8 connecting the M1 at Lagan Valley Park to the M4 at Stranmillis.
* An M11 running from the M1 at Finaghy north round Lisburn, crossing south and going all the way to Newry.
* An M12 Urban Motorway in Portadown/Lurgan (Craigavon new town).
* An M22 running from the M2 at Antrim to Castledawson.
* An M23 running from the M2 near Ballymoney to Derry.

It was recognised that this was a long-term plan and that the completion of the M1 and M2 would take first priority. It is also interesting that at no point were motorways considered for much of the west of the province.

The road aint that bad, its no different to many routes into Belfast.

And the roads closest to Belfast cause the bottle necks anyway, so widening that to 3 lanes isnt going to make any difference.
the traffic cant go anywhere easily when it hits belfast.

The road is a complete bollox, and its become a whole lot worse in recent months.

There are too many traffic lights for a start and too many inconsiderate b@stards turning right in the mornings

If they widen the road to 3 lanes it will definately speed up the journey to Belfast, but I doubt it'll be the same from Belfast
However they're going to have to also do something with the stretch before Tillysburn
I'm not saying widen etc, but just examine if all those sets of lights are really necessary say between 7.30am and 9am weekdays

A greater number of vehicles head for the M3 in the mornings and not the city centre

That road is a bollox.

The M1 into Belfast is a bollox

The M5 from Carrick is a total bollox.

The M2 is a bollox

Shaws bridge/Malone is a bollox.

So really, its no different to any other route into belfast in the morning.

I suspect that given the volume of traffic heading into Belfast in general, that most coming from Bangor do indeed head for Belfast as opposed to the M3 which in some cases would take them back out of Belfast.

Although a more direct route from M2 or M3 onto the Westlink would be far more benefit than anything.

Having traffic light junctions at the intersection of all these motorways is just plain stupid. That is a massive bottleneck that needs addressed. Even if they made only 1 lane from each of these routes into a non stop lane, it would be a massive help.

I agree with the M2/M3/Westlink comment

The comments I made about more heading to M3 than city centre are purly from what I witness every morning
Today for example I'm stuck at dee street lights in inside lane
There's approx 10 cars in front - similar number in outside lane

Now out of these 20 cars only 3 went towards city centre (including me)
Its like that most mornings.

I used to live in Carrick so I can comment on that stupid road also and I'd say its close to the problems on Bangor stretch
Carricks problems aren't confined to the single lane bit either.

Exactly, the bottle neck for all routes mostly boils down to the M2/M3/westlink intersection.

If they sorted that, all other routes would improve.

Of course the other option is to get out of bed earlier lol Ive known guys who lived in Carrick before, and they would usually hit site around 0710 and snooze in the car til a start at 0800, purely to avoid traffic.
