Big thanks to Jasemac for supplying it.The air bag came off with no probs and the new one fitted easily after sorting the horn. The only down side is the gap under the boss. Any ideas what to do?

And no comments on it needing cleaning.

Well, personally, I'd clean it out, then it won't be so noticeable?...................

:
Seriuosly: this is one I'm trying to pluck up courage to do.
Do you mind telling us the costs involved, and describing the job?
Did you do it yourself?
Your car is an STi, I think. Would there be any probs doing this with a '98 UK car, do you happen to know?

Mail me if it's easier.
Thanks
Alcazar

alcazar,

Yes mate, I did the job myself with help from jasemac.

My car is a 97 WRX (non STI) and had the ugly black bus type wheel fitted. It was really easy to do, but you need to be careful as the air bag could seriously injure or kill you if it goes off.

I did mine by following the instructions here, but please remember you do so at your own risk. I will not be liable for any injury or death caused by anything going wrong if you decide to undertake the work yourself. I advise that if you are not competent in the removal of air bags to consult your dealer first.

Ok, if you have removed the air bag and want to fit an aftermarket wheel then this bit is easy.

The plastic mounting ring for the steering wheel needs to be removed.

First, disconnect the wiring loom that runs from the ring under the dashboard.

The plastic ring should now prise free with a bit of care.

All you need to do now is fit your new wheel and boss.

The horn is a totally different subject, but this is what you need to do.

1)Get a brass pin from a non- airbag scoob or a Nissan that connects the lower contact ring on the steering wheel boss to the wire that feeds the earth to the horn. There should be a hole in the white plastic stalk mount that houses this pin. Make sure you have a piece of wire connected at some point to the pin (use your electrical skills here).

2)Connect the wire from the pin to the wire that feeds the earth to the horn. This was a green wire on mine, but please check your own. It should be one of the wires in the loom under the dashboard that went to the air bag ring you removed.

3)The horn mechanism on the steering wheel will be dependant on the type of wheel being fitted, but should be straight forward

In a couple of days I will ad some pics of the pin to make things clearer.

If anything here appears to be wrong, please correct it or mail me.
