I'm looking to tap the thread of the gear-stick further down to fit a different ****.

What I need is a tap size 12 - 1.25

I can't find these anywhere near me, the only place that can get one will have to order it and charge £12. I was wondering if some kind hearted sole on here, that's possibly done this mod, could let me borrow their tap. Perhaps post it to me - I'll do the job and send it back the same day.

Your right about the thread type - M12 Fine.
Is it the tap your after or the die ?
I definatley can get my hands on a tap, so the same source may have a die.
Let me know which and I'll go and ask.

Its the tap I believe i.e. to put a thread onto the bare metal of the gear stick.

Let me know if its available and I'll send a SAE down to you.

That'll be the die then Felix. You'd need the tap if you were trying to extend the thread in the gearknob.

My contact wasn't in yesterday (maybe on holiday) but as soon as I see him I'll ask.

errr apparently it is the die I need.

My contact must be on Holiday - none of his workmates have a clue where he is but as soon as he reappears I'll ask.

Asked him this am.
He borrowed the tap, for me, off one of his contacts (still had it in his drawer 6 months on ) so he'll see his mate today (returning the tap! ) and will ask to borrow a die.
He didn't hold out much hope as they now "chase" threads onto bars etc.. but I'll let you know as soon as I know anything.
