My partner has had a shunt in her ford ka. The damage is minimal but it looks like they'll write it off as cat D due to value.

Question is, if she is paid out and opts to buy the car back will she need to tell future insurers that her car is cat D? Does it increase your insurance if your car is cat D over the same car that isn't?

Yes, she does need to tell the insurers really.

Some insurers won't cover Cat C/D cars, but most are ok, without any increase.

Always worth checking with your insurers though, just to be safe.

she's an insurance underwriter but didn't have a clue herself yet I'm expected to know everything about anything electric just because I'm an 'IT engineer'.

Note you need to tell them (i believe) as it is technically worth less than a 'straight' car so payout on any future claims for that car will be less. If you don't tell them, they'll find out anyway through the database so you might find they refuse to payout if you need them to.

You need to tell any prospective buyer too if you sell it.
