I want a stable connection, especially for work and video calls. I am thinking of pulling the cable through the walls, so that it is neat. But I don’t understand which Ethernet cable to choose. There are some “cat 5”, “cat 6”, and I am at a loss. What is the difference? How important is all this for an ordinary user? And is it true that the length of the cable affects the speed?

Yes, that’s right, the length matters, but the main thing is the cable category. For example, cat 5e speed - up to 1 Gbps at a distance of up to 100 meters. This is now the minimum standard, and it is quite sufficient for home use. If you want something “for growth”, you can take Cat 6 - it supports up to 10 Gbps, but only on short sections (up to 55 m). For your case, if you plan to pull it around the apartment and you have a regular gigabit Internet, take Cat 5e - you will not overpay, and the speed will be stable. It is also important to consider the environment - if there are electrical appliances nearby, it is better to take a shielded version.

I got about 20 meters, and I chose what was at hand - and everything works fine. I think that if you do not live in an industrial area and do not plan a gigabit local network between servers, then any modern cable will do. The main thing is not to take a very old and low-quality one. And also check that the RJ-45 connectors are properly crimped. By the way, it is often not the cable that has more of an effect, but the devices you connect.
