Default boost control solenoid

hi all, ive had an on going boost problem with my bug for ages now, have gone through lots of stuff so far to no avail. decided to take another look at the bcs today, now it clicks away when i power it up off battery, and it isnt dirty, but i just thought id drive the car home from work with it disconnected and to my surprise the car seemed to drive way smoother. now i didnt have high boost oviously but low down it felt way better. connected it back on and yes the boost gauge goes higher but car went back to feeling bit slugish and the gauge went back jumping up and down. is it worth my while geting new bcs? i know there 2 wires going into it must check what voltage i have there.any help would be great
