what power can i safely get out of an 03 wrx engine before the need for forging?

That depends on how long you want it to last, how mechanically sympathetic you are and the previous history of the engine.

350 is as high as I would be willing to go with one.

the engine wont be your only problem as the gearbox might not last at that power either.

i have no idea about your gearbox i was replying to the engine power and that the 5 speed box is a bit weak at high power so could potentially cause problems at that bhp.

The Sti would only be good for 400 mate, so dont worry. Don't start chasing numbers. Trust me 350 is ample and what most people are running, I would guess.
If your wanting anything over 400, it's a built engine and a blooming expensive turbo and a whole lot more.
