Default Quickest spooling turbo for 340-350bhp

Currently considering my options of a future turbo upgrade to hit 340-350bhp.

The car (version 5 STi) is only ever going to be used on the road so acceleration is key rather than top speeds, thus quickest spool rate turbo recommendations please... actual BHP figures arent really that important.

Thanks

PS. Current turbo is VF28

For that figure I'd go for either vf34 or sc36 billet, both spool very well and can hit the 340-350 mark.

Out of interest, what bhp are you running on your vf28? Isn't that quite a quick spooling turbo.

The VF34 and 48's... what RPM do they reach 1bar?

Unsure of the current power of mine, i'd assume around 300-310 based on the mods

SC36 billet twin scroll spools very fast, full boost by 3000 rpm iirc, and made 400 bhp on 20% meth.

I have a vf34 on my classic wrx wagon. With the mods i have i am running 315bhp with 330ftlb. Running at 0.9bar. Mine spools up at around 3000/3500 and keeps going to 6000.

Going to try and keep costs to a minimum, so that I assume would rule out the SC36, plus sticking with original 440cc injectors so no real point in going for a turbo that wont be using its full potential... seems a newer version of the VF series is the one to go for then.

So between the VF34 and VF48... what are the power limits of each, which is the faster spooler (no way is that grammatically correct??) and do either have any known issues with fragility?

After watching both 34 and 48 on the rollers[one after another] on a 2 litre I'd go with 34 given the better bhp/torque they can reach with minimal difference in spool.
If it was a 2.5 it would be the other way round.

vf35/34, 35 spools quicker than a 34 but smaller top end power, some have got very good results as in 350 plus but i think on average its more like 330

vf34 more top end so should defo see 350 ,slightly laggier and more expensive but still a cheapish turbo.

i was under the impression the 34 and the 48 are the same core with the same exhaust wheel size, just the 48 has a smaller impellor to aid spool

The VF48 delivers the power much smoother than the rest, i had 341 on a newage sti and then 370+ using meth. The torque figure can be a bit low on them but still a good unit.

Have you considered keeping your turbo and fitting ported headers and fmic, along with a map tweak should yield 330 with stronger torque and even faster spoolup which would prob feel better than a peaky 350??

Is the VF28 on the P1 aswell? If so my mates P1 made 340bhp and 332lb ft on the standard turbo with a decat, remap, fuel pump and panel filter. Remap was done by Andy F. Car is pretty rapid.

Also been in a Ver 9 with a vf35, decat, remap with 320bhp at about 1 bar and spooled superbly, even in 6th gear at 2000rpm you could actually hear the turbo spooling.

Could you not just simply carry out a couple of mods on your current VF28?

To be honest i'm making comparisons between my old WRX classic and my new STi one, the old one was 313bhp running a VF22, FMIC and ported headers and uppipe... and felt much quicker than the STi.

Will a FMIC make big differences when compared with an STi 8 TMIC?

The intercooler could add a bit of lag so when the turbo comes in it hits you at once and feels quicker. Think it could give a bit more power at less boost if anything mate, its more the intake temps.

What power is your sti mate?

Your current vf28 is one of the fastest spooling turbos in the vf range and is good for 330+ bhp . By fitting another turbo you may gain 10 - 20 bhp but actually lose some spool up time. If you were looking for 320 bhp and mega quick spool up then you won't beat a andy Forrest td04 hybrid. Failing that if you had your current turbo ported , it probably will see 340 bhp with real quick spool up imho.

This seems an interesting concept... so which modifications will best suit a ported VF28 for torque and spool time? Approx costs of porting a VF28?

So far the power of mine is probably around the 300-310bhp mark, its running an ECUTEK remap on the standard VF28, standard headers, H&S uppipe, 3" decat downpipe (which tapers to around 2.5-2.75"), 3" Revolution system, STi 8 TMIC, 440cc Injectors and NGK plugs

Your probably want to speak to Harvey regarding cost of porting your turbo. Interestingly my MY00 has a vf28 and is hitting 330 bhp 326 lb/ft running std headers & up pipe with a V6 sti intercooler & a full decat with a 2.5' system. I have no problems with spool up , as boost starts at 2800/2900 rpm which is quicker than a vf35.
