Is the check engine lamp lit & has the mileometer also stopped working too?

If this is the case then the Speedo has stopped receiving it's signal from the gearbox, which in your car I believe is delivered by a cable directly from the gearbox to the back of the speedo.

If on the other hand, the mileometer is still counting up when you drive the car, then the fault lies within the speedo head itself & you will need to replace it.
