you may need a HKS Fuel cut defender, has it only started now the air is colder?

Yes remap is the safe way to stop it happening and get it sorted, although you could use a fuel cut defender to stop it hitting the cut. Problem is there is a reason that is there and really the solution is a mappable ecu of some sorts.

What car is it to start with?
And any of the above can and will cause you to overboost.

I had the same issue with my V3 Sti many years ago - ended up fitting a Blitz DSBC under dash (hidden so I wouldn't be tempted to tinker) and set at max of 1.3 bar - ran like a dream after that

doesnt sounds like spike, sounds like over boost full stop. z4 should only boost to 0.9bar. check the boost pipes are connected to the solenod correctly and check the restrictor is fitted in the bottom hose still.

z4 will boost to 1.1 ish without hitting the cut if a mcb is used, 1.2 will deffo be hitting the fuel cut, check for vac leaks as a tiny leak can raise the boost in the same way an mcb will

Its boosting higher due to the mods.

Get it mapped or remove some mods until you can afford to have it mapped properly.
