Think you need pistons and maybe rods to run reliably at this level. Plus supporting mods obviously

2.5 from the STi? If so 400 will be safe, some people have run more.

You will need STI TMIC or FMIC
400bhp turbo, 20g or MD321H
550 Sti pinks
Fuel pump
Remap

Bear in mind 400bhp is right on the limit of the standard cast pistons

Ye 400 will be easy on that. I ran 400/400 on a standard 2.5 lump for over a year with serious abuse!!

So you should be fine mate

ive had mine mapped to 370 as mapper told me this is round about the limit for the OE hawk pistons.
Although this meant running the 20g at 1.4bar instead of the higher boosts which is possible, i choose to take the mappers advice rather than take a chance and having the engine go pop for the sake of 30-40 extra hp
Others have run theres quite succesfully with higher figures, but do you want to be the unlucky 1 that didnt? Thats my thinking anyways

Above 1.35 bar on the OEM Item and you're risking it!

i do agree, well maybe 1.4 bar :P but as said that should be as far as your really looking, Bob Rawle advised me 360-370 was all the OEM pistons on hawk sti reliabily handle , i certainly wasnt going to go against his advice and the car feels like a monster.
Having said that iam sure i will have tamed the beast in a couple of months and require more power

But i have a problem and was wondering if any one can help,
when i get close to 5.500 rpm im loosing boost and also in first gear it goes to 1 bar boost and 2nd gear its 1.2 bar then 3rd,4th,5th and 6th its 1.3 bar, would anyone know the cause of this

Yes it is, you dont need alot of boost in those 2 gears because you go through them that quickly though pretty much every turbo car I know restricts boost in the first 2 gears.

We both use the same mapper then!

Hawk pistons just aren't strong (ask Ian Litchfield when he was developing the Type 25) or David at APi who re-builds more engines than most, or most a mappers, who will say that 1.3 ish is about as high as they're comfortable going. Not that you need to put alot of boost through the 2.5 to get it to perform well. Before I had the forged conversion on my car, 1.3 was all it too to get it to 350/380 on the std VF43. Even now (with forged in internals) it makes 470/480 at 1.7 bar with the SC46 which isn't exactly monster boost!

My old UK 99 took 1.5 bar peak on the std cast items and didn't miss a beat.... that's progress for ya!

Well I've just got back from mapping with Bob Rawle and on the original turbo, vf43 (but set up by Big D), and standard engine he said it's now 390+bhp, but I am running a hyperflow front mount and full miltek exhaust with headers well chuffed, oh and running a steady 1.3/1.4 bar boost oh the car is a '57 plate sti type uk hawk.

Good result. Just shows you what a good exhaust system and FMIC can do over the PPP equipment!

Nest you'll be wanting something in the 400s though and then it starts to get expensive!

Thanks chaps. I'm bloody well happy with it. But I'm never content, i know that I'm reaching the max limits of the car so next step will be a proper engine build and new turbo and I'm aiming for the 500 mark but that's long term over the next year or two. But for now what a great result. Just goes to prove what is actually capable with a good set up and a bit of tweaking of the original turbo. Can't wait for the power run tomorrow now to see exactly what it is putting out :-)

should not need 550 injectors as the 2.5 are fitted with 650 standard

But also goes to show that you don't have to change the turbo, or the injectors to get 400bhp

Everyone keeps telling me that it's pretty impressive, that power on such low boost... Dare i even say i could be the only 2.5 like it anywhere in the UK?? As I've not heard of any other one running that power still on the original vf43 on that boost??
I've had a few who's doubted it and even told me I'm lying and that it's not possible but quite clearly it is as it's done it! Lol

Mate people will always be jealous I would be happy in the fact that I have a motor that is producing some serious power for good value.

Although I must admit a tinge of the green-eyed monster. Lol

Lol I have to admit I've been REALLY lucky so far with this impreza (bar some idiot scratching it a week ago).
I'd be happy with your sort of power tho, what set-up are you currently running??

HKS 3" down pipe
HKS 3" Silent Hi Power back box
Haywood & Scott centre section
Prodrive 3 port boost Solonoid
Walbro 255Lph fuel pump
Mahale pistons with uprated head studs
Custom Open S remap by FB tunning
uprated spark pluggs. 1 degree colder i think.
Performance friction pads alround.
