I have had similar problems on my Legacy (modified '91 saloon). I cured them by using Redline Racing 10/30 synthetic oil. It took a while for it to clear the problem but now I have no tappet noise at all. Mail me if you need more info.

had this problem in my legacy '93
use a product called super-roo made for subaru for noisy tappets
just add it when changing the oil worked well, but the noisy did come back after a few months but not as bad.
i think you can get it from your subaru dealer.

hope this helps
jon.

Thumbs up

The Wynns hydraulic valve lifter treatment is the product recommended by Subaru. I have had varying degrees of success with it but the problem does tend to re-occur. The only PERMANENT cure is as i said before to fit early (MK1) Imp Heads. This is something i have done successfully that many times i dont care to remember............

2X Impreza heads, Cams, Head Bolts etc, should cost about £300.A Head Gasket set is about £140. Obviously you will need oil, filter and coolant. If you need anymore help or advice ring me on 01422 846868.
It may sound a lot but lifters are £24 each and there is 16 of them and its not permanent.

I aggree with bigbear. This is a common problem and in the end changing the oil every 3 to 4 months is the cheapest option - a.d should make the engine last a bit longer.
I've been over this before....... It's a bit annoying but you get used to it!
