Default core plug help plzzzz

Ive got a subaru wrx y reg, it started overheating. Ive taken off the intercooler
and just under where the intercooler connects onto the inlet manifold there is a core plug leaking.
Cannot find the part anywhere, its 21mm. subaru are saying i need to buy the complete unit that the core plug fits to

Is there a way around this? The complete unit is rather expensive.

What do you mean a cross over pipe? There are no threads on this hole.
Thanks for the reply.

That large cast silver coloured flattened metal piece that the core plug sits in is called the "cross-over pipe", as it allows the coolant to cross-over from one half of the flat-4 block to the other. That's the part that my94wrx and Subaru are on about...

Get it welded up, a local machine shop combined with a welder could do it no problem. It's more of a pain than just tapping in a core plug though! But you might pick up a used water cross pipe for less than the cost of a repair. Don't forget that any core plug will do if it's the right size, so a general parts supplier might be able to get one.

Why do engine blocks/components have core plugs in the first place?! Just seems an unnecessary thing to go wrong.

Or is it a "fail-safe" pressure-relieving thing, should pressures get too high?

I've got a water crosspipe for a 1999/2000 that's in good condition, and you can have for £20 posted - PM me

So that it's possible to manufacture them in the first place.

Oh right.

As in they're required due to the forming process? Or convenient places for 'hanging' the blocks?

To make it possible to cast them, although more modern processes mean less core plugs are required these days.
