Do these markings mean its a Closed Deck Block?
Engine out of a phase 1 classic WRX MY1993, square markings where the starter motor fits to the top left of the flywheel.

Also, I have a spare engine from a MY1994 Legacy GT could that engine be a closed deck block also? The engines not out the legacy so havent stripped it to look for markings etc.
Cheers for any info!

Hope the legacy engine is a closed deck block too but not sure if they were fitted to the legacys?
Cheers,

I'm sure they can be normally seen not to far from the engine type, the EJ20 part on the top of the block, in the middle. but think they are pretty much all over, so the one you have in the pic is a CDB.

From memory, according to API Dave, THE ONLY way of determining a CDB (without looking inside it obviously), is the cross-hatchings around the oil filter housing. Some blocks have the x-hatching elsewhere too, but this appararently is NOT conclusive (only around the oil filter housing is).

But then again that is a method to tell without taking the engine out.... I read that around the starter motor (as in this pic) also means its a CDB but not many people have the engine out to check this location?Hopefully Dave will be able to confirm or not if thats a sure way to tell... I would go look round the oil filter housing but the cars some 200miles away from me at the mo!
Cheers again,

The other markings can/ might be an indicator, but the oil filter housing is the one to rely upon.
