Default Turbo 2000 vs WRX

I've has a search but can't find much. What are the differences between a 1996 Turbo 2000 (mine) and a WRX that give the import 60ish bhp more?

Sorry for the very noob question!

It's all in the ECU ...

Pretty much an increased target boost level and, presumably, an overall more aggressive map (more ign. adv.).

As joz8968 says. its all in the ecu, making use of the superior Japanese fuel (highter octane)

Would it not be possible to jut put in a Jap WRX ecu to a UK Turbo,or is that a bad idea? I undersand the need to use higher octane, would 97ron suffice?

I am looking at getting it mapped, my issue is that costs near enough £900 and a WRX ECU is £125.

If I'm right, I can't just remap the curretn ECU as I have an early 96, which I understand needs a new ECU fitting.

Yours can be mapped using ESL.

Have a look here www.jollygreenmonster.co.uk

There are other mappers out there. Depends on where you are in the country.

The WRX Ecu is as you say mapped to run Jap fuel and even if you put it iin your Turbo2000 will need to map it to suit your car

Im having the same prob but the other way arround. I was sold a uk Turbo 2000 engine and it was ment to be a WRX engine. Its running the WRX ecu so im now trying to find out what i have to do to make it run right. And for as little £££ as possible as i only brought the new engine to put in and sell the car.

Ok cheers.

Another question tho, if a WRX ECU is mapped for Jap fuel and this causes issue, do imports suffer as a result?

So if I got an ESL daughterboard and map, would I see gains with no additional hardware (save my Prodrive rear box)?

all you need to do is keep your old turbo and injectors and ecu and put them on the new block, hey presto your running again

that will be it as uk and import injectors are different specs, the import are a better spec so the ecu needs to match them,. viser verser, good luck

martin, your MY96 uses the same TD05H, TMIC and 380cc injectors as the WRX counterpart. You can simply swap out your UKDM ECU for a MY93-96 JDM one. You need to swap the cam and crank sensor pin-outs around and something else (can't remember), and hey presto, your car will be producing at least c.240PS (237bhp). Use at least 97RON though.

If you're gonna do that, then why not go for a MY95/96 ECU such as a STi "Z4"... will be making around 260PS (256bhp).

I think there's also the "6K"(?) MY96 STi one which is 275PS (271bhp)... but these are rare things to come by.

Best bet is to get the PP chip for up to 280bhp (depending if decatted, etc.)... if you can find one!

hie ecu is mapped to the wrong injectors thats why he needs to change them as jdm and uk are different specs, i have just been through the same thing , i called david at api and had a lengthy chat and he said that the injectors were infact different, so armed with his knowledge i swapped them to match up with the ecu and burble burble happy happy,.

Addi

So If I can get a MY96 Sti ECU, injectors and "cam and crank sensor pin-outs" then I will basically have Sti spec power?

Joz
Re-reading your post, what is a PP chip, is it "Prodrive Performance" or something different?
Thanks

Martin, ignore my bit about the wires changing over - I'm wrong on that.

I'm sure the MY93-96 Ph.1 cars all had 380cc injectors, whether WRX, STi... or... UK cars.

Now I'm confused.

It's the "Polar Performance" chip. The business venture of Scott T... but is no longer trading the PP venture.

So, there will now be a finite amount of second hand ones already in 4-plug ECUs, knocking about.

Expect to pay around £80 2nd hand already installed into a ECU.

Doing a bit of reading I have found this:

The chip plugs into a spare location within the 1993 - 1996 ECU and emulates the standard ECU operation. The performance maps within this code are then modified. It unlocks greater performance with modifications made to fuel/ignition maps, boost target map, boost control map, boost limit values and speed limit values. Expected Performance increase is 30-50BHP depending on supporting modifications.
Am I correct in thinking that by gettign one of these, I wouldnt need it mapped again for basic mods (decatted turbo-back?) and the 'chip/ecu' would learn the mods?

My Turbo 2000 engine is running fine now with a Wrx ecu. Just had to fill it with Vpower.

Can you post the hyperlink to the above.

Beware, there are a lot of imitation chips of varying "quality".

The PP is a known quantity and works fine. There's plenty of headroom on the fuelling for example so, really, the PP one is the safest option IMO.

would still use octane booster with a ratio of 1ml to 1 litre of SUL until mapped for uk fuel. either that or drive the car off boost all the time until remap

Yeah will do mate. Don’t want to break it now ive finally got it going.

Just out of interest how come the imports can run on super plus without octane booster but an English engine with Jap spec ECU cant

Yep that's THE one!

As said though, the company is no longer trading, so it's a case looking for 2nd hand ones from now on...

Ok brilliant, I will look out for one if I can.

If I can not find one soon, I have found a U8 ECU. However it appears to 'only' be from a 96 WRX, would this be the best ECU to get? (assuming I got the matching injectors if mine turn out to differ).

Also, would £150 sound a fair price?

OR would a Z4 ECU for £50 be a better option at this stage?
