Default clio drinking fuel!!

hi all, sorry for the non scoob related question but people on here have always been great when it comes to helping others out. i recently bought a 02 plate 1.2 16v clio as i had to sell the scoob due to job loss. the car is only doing 30mpg (should be getting around 40-45 i believe) which the trip confirms. there is no leak i can see, the car has no service stamp for 3 years, could it be that it just needs a good service or does it sound more sinister? i dont really want to spend a lot on it as im looking to buy another scoob soon but im obviously putting more fuel in than id like. any help would be greatefully recieved

How is it being used?

If it's getting short runs in VERY cold conditions, you will do well to get better than 30mpg, to be honest.

If the engine is getting fully warmed and it's being driven on reasonably flat roads at cruising speed, yes, you ought to see more, but again, if it's stop-start, traffic, uphill and down dale, trying to stay with the fast lane on motorways, on and off the throttle, then no.

Tell us abit more?

car is being used in short-ish stints around town so it is a bit stop start. i guess i thought i would see a difference in fuel costs with it being a small engine but its using just as much as my wrx to be honest. been a long while since ive had anything this small, had subaru, focus st and other fast-ish (lol) fords since i was 20!
