You might need a new speed sensor. Fits on the gearbox and not difficult to change, you just need to get under the car and get your hands dirty.

If it's a cable driven speedo (1992-1996) then one of the two cable halves has probably snapped. - Chances are, it's still touching together at the break and attempting to drive the speedo head (whilst slipping) - Hence why yo see a very slow speed on the clocks.

I thought the classics ran speed sensors, didn't realise they were cable. Nice one

Either way you'll be getting your hands dirty

A 2 piece cable for phase1
2pin sensor for phase1.5
3pin sensor for phase2 and onwards
