Default PPG gearsets.

Hi All

I'm in the middle of building my Classic Wagon at the moment just for a bit of fun on the road and something to play with in my spare time. I'm just rebuilding it with a stock bottom end at the moment, but if it all works when I put it back together, which I hope it will, Lol. I'm going to then build a 2.0 CDB with stock sized forged internals. I want to aim for 500hp, but I dont want a 6 speed, I'm lazy.

After a few threads on here reading about them, I'm starting to like the sound of the PPG gearsets..

I just wondered what the differences were throughout the variants they do?

Helical
Straight Cut
Dog

I know nothing about transmission, so I really should learn.

Also which set would you guys recommend to me for what I'm aiming for? I will be going for 350bhp on stock engine, then after sourcing turbos/parts etc and building a bottom end I will be going after 450-500, so I want something that will cater for both of those areas but wont be overkill.

Any info much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi mate, I have a ppg straight cut gearset on my wrx it is synchromesh, not dogbox.

Helical and straight cut are the tooth profiles, helical being angled like every car produced from a factory they are more or less silent, (ppg variant) However bigger and stronger than standard! Straight cut can take alot more power, the teeth make full contact all the time unlike helical cut gears, they whine very loudly, a bit like reverse but louder, I love it, sounds like a rally car I think straight cut would be better for your power.

The choice of dogbox and synchromesh engagement, I wouldn't reccomend dogbox for road, more for a track day car. The plus side of dogbox is banging it into gear wihout clutch, very fast!! Hard to drive normally everyday, slow moving traffic a nightmare!! Hope this helps

Just to add to this a 500bhp 2 litre car will be pretty laggy.

Banny, thats an aim. I'm still trying to learn what spec I want and what will work with what.

I want to be over 400 for sure, anything over that I'm happy with. I dont really want any lag. Also I dont want to go down the route of stroker kits.

I will go for the straight cut kit I think, I secretly love the whine and it sounds like the best choice for my car. I had a feeling the dogbox would be overkill really, but I love the sound of banging it into gear without the clutch, Lol. But I dont think I'll ever need to use that on the road. Haha.

Thanks for your help Paul.

Avcs heads are a defo bonus with a 2 litre car to improve spool and response.
