i have a 96 classic impreza, and for a while when turning the key in the ignition it doesnt start straight away but now it has got worse.it does start but takes a few mins to start .someone told me it could be the starter motor and the solinoid is on its way out .i thought it might be my ignition ? there is a click from the engine when the key is turned not sure where to take it any ideas ,im based in bradfrord, cheers matthew.

 

I have exactly the same problem! The solenoid always clicks (so it must be okay) but it can sometimes take about 20 to 30 turns before the starter jumps into life. This happens more in cold/very cold weather.

I'm sure for some reason (simply, no doubt, due to old age) that the pinion is sticking. I've already bought a nice, totally re-con'd starter but have been a lazy sod and not fitted it yet (I'm pushing my luck with regard to getting stranded ...)
