I've got a MY95 WRX and its located in the exhaust manifold, drivers side, accessable from underneath the car. It sticks out of a hole in one of the heatshields just behind the bumper.

I think!

hope this helps, can't remember the spanner size but it is around the 22mm mark.

Lumby,

I also have a 1994 wrx, just tested my lambda (2 wire) and was getting a constant 0.01 volts with no fluctuation. Knackerd i think! did you replace yours & what with, does anyone know where i can get one from because i aint paying £290 for a genuine jap lambda.

cheers

Mark.

You have to remove the heatshield before you can get to the sensor nut.
Once this is removed it is a 22mm that unscrews it, if you unplug the sensot first you will be able to pass the wire through the spanner so that you can use the ring end of the spanner..
Lucas make a universal sensor that is about £35 iirc
I used one before i replaced with an oifficial subaru one.
I got the Subaru one for £120 from BR developments.

Just realised that i was testing the wrong sensor. I have 2 sensors in my exhaust. the lambda which is on the drivers side in the manifold just behind the front bumper. And another in the bend at the end of the down pipe directly under the drivers foot well

Does any one know what the sensor is in the exhaust under the foot well on my 94 wrx

cheers

Clint, who told you they send out different voltages?????? Did they give you any more info than that. There are many jap cars running around on UK lambdas... and running correctly too (mine included). I don't suppose it was the people that sold you the £300 sensor that told you you had to use it .

Right voltage output
Right connector
Better petrol economy

Question

Tweenierob, how much did you pay as I think mine is on the way out. How do I go about checking it?

It was £120 to my door from www.brdevelopments.co.uk

Find the pin out on the ecu and test the voltage, the voltage stayed static on my car no matter what. (0.250v) Not good!!!
You should also un plug the sensor and test the signal wire at the plug(sensor side) to make sure that the wire from the ecu to the sensor is not broken....
The sensor does not have to be plugged in to give an output as it produces its own voltage.
The voltage should fluctuate on idle and peak over 0.8v on boost.

The car uses the lambda sensor to monitor fuelling on idle and on cruise. If the lambda sensor has failed, then the idle will be very eratic.

You should see lambda voltages of between 0.00 and 0.91 if it is working correctly. On idle, it will fluctuate between 0.00 and 0.87v.

You could also check your emissions, if they are way out like mine are then its busted.

Can anyone comment on how easy it is to remove the relevant bit of heatshield to to to the sensor (in the manifold of early WRX's) ?

Is it just a portion of the heatshield
or do you end up taking most of it off
I assume that most of the small bolts will have seized but might get lucking freeing them off

Just preparing myself for if/when mine ever goes !

well the bosch sensor was complety wrong so i had a 1998 second hand one put on and modified to suit but thats even worse,

does any one know what the readings fror the other two wire should be.

I have tested the voltages on all three wires, red gives 13 volts the wite also gives 13 volts and the black (whick i think is the signal wire which sould give 0.0 to 0.9v) gives 0.01 constant so im guessing the 1998 one is busted as well.

have i read the correct wire (black) and i assume the other wires are power supply, maybe one is a heater element wire if my sensor has one.

I might try to get one from BR Developments

oh and the heat shield is small and i assume its easy to take off cos im going to have to put it back on myself cos my local garage forgot to put it back on!!!!!
